I just realised that you can claim this. Last year I worked for 6 months and rented accommodation from my employer for the same period of time. I paid rent in cash and got no receipts. Does this mean I can't claim?

That tax relief disappeared in the 2011 Budget iirc.If you worked for six months only, you may not have paid enough tax to claim the relief anyway. Check your P45/ P60 and if you have paid tax you may be able to reclaim some in any case.

Unless you were renting before 07/12/10, you can't claim the relief. If you were and paid tax in 2011, then you can claim using the rent 1 form.

Hi guys, quick query RE Rent Relief,
I applied online for rent relief for 2008 and 2009 and it wasnt rejected. So how long does it take the revenue to refund the tax? Is it posted out to me by cheque or a bank transfer or is it put in my wages like emergency tax? I hope it doesnt take too long......

The reliefs you claimed were for prior tax years meaning any refunds due are based on the tax paid in those years. Any refunds due are sent to your bank account if you entered those online; otherwise its a cheque to your address.
Claiming a relief for the present tax year would allow your employer to recalculate your tax for this tax year only and process a small refund if due, through your wages.

If you ticked the box for electronic correspondence, then check your requests history as a P21 balancing statement should show up within 48 hours of the claim. On the first page of the P21, it will tell you if a refund is due and how it will be paid to you.

    Hey,

I got a letter a week and a half ago saying any funds owed will be paid directly to you back account and to check that the details are correct. Still nothing in my account though, how long does that normally take???
