Are you in debt?

I'm always amazing at some of the debts people are toiling beneath these days. People just finished college, or in some cases still in college strutting around with over ten grand debt over their head. I'd hate that. I'm lucky enough to have avoided getting into any debt, but I'd be awfully interested to hear from others who haven't....

No. Actually have a bit invested thank fook. It will probably be no use to me though anyway once the industrial collapse beings to really take off.

And now, the worst appears to be over. Last night's smug storm… has left thousands homeless. All across the Midwest, people are picking up the pieces. Cities like Denver and South Park are heavily damaged, but still all right. However, San Francisco, I'm afraid… has disappeared completely up its own asshole.

No. Im far too boring and sensible for that. I once had a grand on the credit card and it nearly killed me till I got the balance bank to a nice round zero.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

I owe about €200 on my credit card.

And I pay €150 per month for dental fees (standing order), which will go on until June 2013.

    That's it thankfully!

    where's the "no" option

Zero debt here but I know many aged 25-40 who are tens of thousands of euro in debt.

Once the "economic downturn" happened and I seen my friends and family consolidating loans and struggling to pay interest only on mortgages I decided to chop down all my debt. This involved practically eating cornflakes for a year and re-negotiating rent and bills and never going anywhere. And giving up smoking permanently and drink temporarily. I got there in the end and kept some of the new stingey habits up so now I actually have savings and no debt.

The whole thing was a blessing in some ways because I would probably have bought a house by around 2010 had things stayed the same. I probably never will now.

    The highest option is 15,000 + ?

You could add a few zeros.

    I've no debt, thankfully.

No chance I'd get a credit card, I don't earn enough. My debit card suits me just fine.

  • Yep, still owe over 15,000 in student loans. Not very happy about it, but wouldn't have been able to go to college otherwise. Other than that, no debt at all. I have a credit card but have always paid it off immediately.

It's a general question and he gave an answer. No need for the sarky hostility :)

I've a student debt of 9k from the UK, which I don't pay a cent on until I earn 24k a year and even then it's 5% of whatever I earn over that. It's automatically wiped if it isn't cleared in 25 years. That's how student fees should be paid. Not expecting the parents to pay or having to go to the bank every year and borrow 2k (3k soon enough).

    Quite surprised at that actually.

For some reason I had the idea that China, Russia, Brazil and mineral or hydrocarbon rich countries were in the black.

What year did you take yours out? I had to start paying mine once I earned over 15K and it never gets wiped.

Why is it the many of the countries of Africa have Public debt as %s of GDP at reasonable levels, yet are always classified as in huge debt? From the looks of things they should be lending us money and giving us aid :pac:

A little loan at Xmas that's it, gave up smoking it makes me sick if I smoke or even try to smoke now, have a tesco bottle of rum in the press which I have no idea how long it's been there I rarely drink it's been about a year and a half since I went out, it makes me sick when some one brags about spending a hundred euro on a night out since I would rather spend it on the kids, DIY is also a hobby and ikea is brill where else can you get a table for €35 and aldi/lidi for shopping

2006. If you're in England it's 15k Sterling. If you're based in Ireland its 21k Sterling or 24k in euros (approx). I haven't paid a cent yet.

That's the system as designed by the government though. And after 25 years you'll have it cleared and well with interest. And if you haven't it's because you had a low paid job and your degree didn't benefit you, or because you haven't been working long term for whatever reason.

    Haven't a clue tbh.

You're wrong there if you started after 2006: "Loans written off 25 years after they became eligible to be repaid". If it's before that, then it's retirement. It's not going to arise though, the minute you earn a decent wage you'll start paying it back:

Financially you'll probably end up better off going to college in the UK. It's a fairer system for everyone too: graduate tax essentially. No reason people earning less should pay for the education of those who will go on to earn more. I've yet to pay a cent in capitation fees, registration, any of that yet. It just shows what a sham free 3rd level education is in this country.

I think I've about 3k left on a car loan - have 2.5k in savings, and saving 400 a month. I could clear the car loan and save 550 a month, but I'd rather the peace of mind that having any amount in savings brings just in case I have an emergency expense. By march I'll "technically" be in the black as I can pay off all debts immediately and remove most recurring expenses should I lose my job (car insurance, motor tax, etc.).

I am finishing college without debt, I don't think I will take out money for my masters (no steady income for payments) so I will probably piddle away years of my life saving up and then do it to find better work but its better than having debt hanging over me.

My sister is one year older than me finishing college as well but she is in debt and working I asked her how she got into debt and she just replied "you know buying stuff on Amazon, going out..." : |

am in quite serious debt due to a appointee [also the manager of home] allowing a carebill to build up- it is supposed to be the contribution am paying towards having residential care and has been building up for a long time,he has been finaly sacked over it recently after a lot of 'garden leave' but am now left with a huge debt with social services/the council.
besides high rate mobility component of DLA [which pays straight to motability/citroen so luckily they cant pinch it] am only on twenty odd pound per week in benefits as ,we arent allowed anything else when we live in residential, but the council has been taking all of that away to pay for this damn bill,it isnt fair how am left to foot the bill,it was awful not having any money whatsoever at christmas to buy others presents or even cards-ended up making them.
thanks to the acting manager have now got a power of attorney with more than one person which means it is now legal instead of just being an appointee so it is safer,he shoud have to pay towards it seeing as he knowingly allowed it to be run up.

Poll needs a lot more options.

15K barely covers a car loan, never mind a house loan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

    Without including mortgage - No
    With including mortgage - Yes
With including mortgage with including value of house - No

So no, I guess. But the poll needs to be more specific. And less of a c**t.

I owe 450,000 on a 1 bed apartment, without electricity or natural light, and 55,000 on a loan for a jeep - the jeep was for doing the shopping.

I still think I made the right decision to bury myself with debt.....
