The back-end of the course is different to what I remember last year(even if I did have a technical problem which meant not getting round). Looks like a longer flatter run-in perhaps to give more of a chance to 'bigger' riders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 244 ✭✭lalorm

Similar to last year, but the finish is on the Laois side of Carlow this time. It'll be a VERY fast run down off Killeshin to the finish.

The Des Hanlon is a savage race and if you fancy yourself on this hills, it's a good one to dispel any illusions up against a quality field. The only place you have to watch out is the left turn off the main road after 30k, take a good position for that. The hills will sort out the rest of the race

You did the A3 last year which was 100km (and did quite well IIRC). How did you get on food/drink wise on the day. It was warm as I recall. Two full bottles and plenty of gels?

Would love to see if anyone has a strava for the A3 course

34kph! Very impressive if that was a solo or training spin. If it was last years A3 race then it shows what a tough course it is.

It was last years A3 race. Looking at my garmin stats the average for the race interval itself (103km) was 35.7kph. Climbing about 1100m.

Was there much of a turn out for the A3 race last year? expecting many this year? im planning on taking part in this, seems to be plenty of climbing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭MichealD

The change of finish is going to make for an even tougher race than last year. Tough extra climb up by the Rossmore statue for all cats!

Must be the hardest one day in the country (bar Shay Elliott ). Fancy Ryan Sherlock for this one.

yeah there was a big turn out. It was probably the hardest race I did last year.

how many finished with you ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 991 ✭✭✭25sean

did this race a few years ago at A3, doing the same sunday... plenty of gels and bars in your back pockets....

michael D, is the finish the one where you descend and take the sharp right, over the bridge then 10/15km to the finish line? or is there an extra climb like you mention?

    thanks

Instead of the sharp right and super fast descent you now take the left and have a super hard 3 or 4km climb! For A3s it will be your 2nd time up the hill. Descend the other side and right turn for fast run in to finish. Will add a few kms to overall distance as well.

A4s didn't do this climb for the last few years so a shock in store!

Pity the finish is changed as it was like the end of Milan San Remo with the high speed and tricky descent! That said it was an organisers nightmare I'd imagine with big numbers, really quick descents, speed bumps and tricky bends.

I'm doing the Lucan GP tomorrow, but am contemplating this one as well

For the A4 race - where's the start / finish on this?

A4s only do one lap, so it's at the 75.3km mark.

edit: if you mean the map, A4s don't do the slightly heavier red line in the middle of the 8-loop. That brings the higher cats around for another lap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,111 ✭✭✭joker77

    Ah right, cheers

The A4 race is on CI as 60Kms - is it going to be this or the 75? Heading yourself buffalo?

This is my mapping of the route - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/75823048/ * - which would be 75km. The first 5km might be neutralised. Not sure where the 60km came from - maybe that was from before the route changed and the bridges were taken out.

I'll be heading down alright. This is my first goal of the season, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for it. Sure we'll find out! :p

*open to correction, that's just my own interpretation, nothing official. But it gives the elevation too. The last 10km appear to be downhill.

Was it you that crashed on the bridge whilst leading the race?

If so, it's your fault that there's more climbing. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I thought it was Pat C, two years ago who hit the bridge? Or did someone else hit it last year?

3 of us, with 3 ahead. I got away from a bunch of about 10-15 on the run in to join two others. I was seeing stars by the finish line and got jumped before I even knew what was going on.

That year two crashed in the A4s. Chris from Bohermeen had been on his own all race and hit the deck on that bridge while on his own. He got up and going again but we caught him with about 4k to go. PatC went down on the same bridge in the same race that year too, he was our chase group.

Was that 2010? When Paul Bolger survived the bridges but not the traffic cones at the finish?!!

No, I was with the leading bunch last year at the bridges (when tawfeeredux solo'ed away), but was dropped at the bridges - a combination of bonking, and a crash ahead of me.

Ahh here lads, i was very excited for this race, but all this talk of crashing/sliding but worst-climbing has me worried. No sitting near the boards lads for me :P

Folks, just to clarify... the race finish has been changed in the interest of rider safety. The previous route with the bridge etc. as mentioned above was difficult to make work for riders and general public traffic. Also on the fast descent through the Ballinabrannagh village, the road surface is dug up everywhere with "roadworks". The route therefore reverts to one used previously and finishing near the cattle mart (it was a start/finish location before). It means an additional 3Km climb for each race, but once over the top (the 70Km mark on the map @ T junction. see cw site) its a roughly 9Km fast run in to the finish. 1K etc. will be marked.

No KOH prizes:( ...can't predict bunch size but here's from "@stickybottle" preview, its usually big enough numbers:

"Des Hanlon Memorial, Carlow Road CC
While some of the racing in the early weeks of the season has been very entertaining and hard fought, nobody would disagree that the Des Hanlon Memorial in Carlow on Sunday is the first truly national one day race of the year.
It’s certainly the first race where all of those riders who’ve proven to be best in the regions in the early part of the season come up against each other. The fact this is the only road race in the Republic on Sunday ensures it will again be a massive race this year."

    Sign on time 9:30 - 11:30.

In my experience (2 years ago) they're very strict with closing sign-on. Don't be late!

Gorgeous day for it! Not as large a turnout in the A4 bunch as the last few weekends (which is just fine by me!), but probably 60-70 riders? Well marshalled race, with moto riders and lead car, and that was the A4!

My legs and lungs were doing well, but without my trusty porridge this morning, my diet was off, and I cramped at 50km with a stitch. Disappointed, and pissed off with myself.

Congrats to manwithaplan on his fourth place! Maybe the weight loss from the bottle got you over those hills faster? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,200 ✭✭✭manwithaplan

I discovered today that there are two things I am very bad at:

    1. Putting bottles into bottle cages, and
    2. Sprinting

Luckily I am alright at climbing which was kind of important today. I dropped my own bottle early on and then also dropped one kindly donated by a Dublin Wheeler.

I saved my effort for the final climb and managed to burn off everyone except three skinny youngfellas. They proceeded to hammer it home and I was only hanging on. I had no sprint and finished last of the breakaway.

Well done manwithaplan, you deserved it.I managed to stay in that break at the start, think there were 6 of us, but when derek byrne turned the screw a little tighter i was done for.Finished in the chase group, started off lovely with just four of us and then everytime i looked around there seemed to be more.Hope those lads that came down are ok.Well done to all, first time doing this and jaysus it was tough for this time of year.

    Well done manwithaplan

Took a spill myself into a ditch after 50kms (A4) - was in 3rd position and just hit the corner too fast, silly. Had been going well up until then, oh well, next time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 765 ✭✭✭oflahero

Well done manwithaplan- I'll count myself among those you burnt off on the final climb. Got over it ok, but was clearly not going to finish within a shout of the points. Lost concentration on the descent too and let a small gap go to my group's wheels, so had to solo it home into the poxy headwind, loudly tsk'ing to myself. Brilliant organization and marshalling by the club today- v impressive stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

Fair play lads for getting round and manwithaplan who must be close to A3 now.

As I said to anyone who asked, my brief foray into open racing is at an end! No heart for it - not surprised or too disappointed giving last year's events. Thinking about it I'm just pissed more so now that I did all that training last year for the Marmotte only to miss it. Fcuking Newcastle roundabout.:pac:

Judging by Strava, you spilled about 200m up the road from where I cramped! Could've buddied back to the finish if stupid cramp hadn't taken so long to fade.
