Samsung Galaxy SII - SMS converting to MMS issue

I tried searching this with as many wording alternatives as I could imagine to see would a thread appear on it, but I couldn't find anything. I Googled a few options too, with little result.

My SGS2 is automatically converting any SMS over three messages long (i.e. anything beyond 3 x 160 character text messages in one message) to an MMS of 1KB. As I get charged for MMS outside of my bill package, I want to know is there anyway to disable this so that it continues on as multiple SMS messages? I have tried adjusting Creation Mode in Settings to 'Restricted', but it seems to make no difference whether is it any of the three options - Restricted, Warning or Free.

I have been using Cabbage to overcome this since I got the phone, but as Cabbage doesn't give a delivery report and it seems it is sending multiple messages as individual texts instead of one long text, I just wanted to see if there was actually any way around this using the stock built-in messaging on the phone?

Thank you muchly in advance for any help,
    gemi

You could try an alternative messaging app.
    Go or handcent ?
They have much more options than the stock messaging apps.

/edit/ do you have the option to SMS split (split messages every 160 characters) turned on?
I'm on ICS on a SG1 so it might differ ?

Thanks! I downloaded handcent today, so will just try using that. I assume that needs internet access at all times to function though, does it?

Sorry, Ste do you mean SMS split on stock messaging system or Cabbage? Can't see that option on Cabbage at quick glance just now, but will have a look on built in and see does it make a difference.

Sorry I meant on stock. Handcent only needs internet to send mms. Remember if using Handcent to turn off stock messaging notifications. Handcent will notify you instead.

It's implemented in alot of custom roms. What are you firmware are you running?
You can get a modified mms.apk for some firmwares or modify it yourself.

If you're going modify your phone in that fashion though, you may as well install a custom rom, it's alot easier.
