Can anyone tell me of a simple, not easy to get lost running route in Glasnevin (leaving from Iona Road) I don't know the area at all, but will have a couple of hours to kill, so I may as well bring the gear with me, and get out for a few miles.

    Thanks :)

You could do a couple of laps around the Botanic Gardens, it's free in and somewhere nice to run around in.

Would you believe you're not actually allowed to run in the Botanics?? I went in one morning and was told by the nice man on the security desk that I could "walk fast, but not run" - honestly, did you ever hear the like??
Ruby, Iona Road is often on my route. One option is to head to the top of Iona - as if you're going to Phibsboro - and turn right. Head up Botanic Road, onto Mobhi Road, until you get to traffic lights. Turn right onto Botanic Avenue and continue straight down till you get to junction with Drumcondra Road (Fagans pub on corner). Turn right and keep going till you hit Whitworth Road. Right again, straight up Whitworth Road till you hit Botanic Road again. Right turn and you're almost back at Iona Road - just over 2 mile loop of the block :).

If you want a longer stretch, start as Rachel stay but go up the incline at Mobhi Road pass Na Fianna GAA club grounds and hang right at Home Farm Road. Go down the road and that will bring you onto Drumcondra road and back down to Fagans as mentioned earlier.

Or you could do the nicest run, if its daylight hours. Just beyond the turn right to Botanic Avenue is a river and a little walkway down into a park. Its Griffith Park and lovely to run in. A lap is just under a mile i think.

Rachelj, i yet to run into you on Iona Road. Must keep an eye out for you.:D

It'd be hard to miss me. Normally by the time I get there, I've done a few miles, come up Botanic Road and I've a big red head on me! Oh, and it's normally before 8 a.m. on a Saturday or Sunday so most normal people are still in bed

Thanks guys for all the info! There are a nice few options for me choose from.

I had wondered about the Botanic Gardens - have to laugh Rachel, at you being told "you can walk fast, but not run" :D

Personally id avoid all the pedestrians, lights etc on them routes and run north up ballymun road to DCU and go straight into albert college. You also have st Clares on ballymun road which is into the left (heading north) just before the esso garage on that road. Plenty of fields there too.

Never realised that, although when I can think of it I can sort of see the reasoning behind it.

You could run out Drumcondra road, Up Home Farm Rd., down Mobhi Rd and back into Iona.

If you want a shorter run just do a few laps of the Botanic Gardens until you've had enough.

My usual is starting at Fagans, up to Quinns and right down to Whitworth road, turning left at Porter House and straight through to Ballymun roadd, on to Griffith Ave and back down Drumcondra Road!

Have only starting running recently, and I think that area is great!

(I also notice how my landmarks seem to all be pubs!) :o

The North Circular Road gates of the Phoenix Park are within ten minutes of Iona road. Another run would be along the Royal Canal to Ashtown then into the Phoenix Park and back down the NCR. Down Clonliffe Road and onto the Clontarf seafront is another option. Depends on how long of a run you intend to do!!!

Handiest I think would be to run around by the Met office onto the Finglas Road and back around by the Graveyard. I cycle a few laps of it one evening a week. Couple of decent inclines and you should really only be stopped my cars, maybe once at the entrance to Addison Park if cars are going in or out. The lap is about 2 1/2 miles I think

Thanks for all the suggestions! Plenty of routes to choose from by the sounds of it.
