    Hi All

I've seen a 2005 model of the above for sale in the local paper.

What is people’s opinion on these with regards reliability and economy?

Could anyone advise if all the autos in 2005 were sold as DSG's or was the standard auto available ?

    Thanks

    I've a 06 DSG 2.0tdi.

Make sure the DMF has been done(~€800), injectors have to be replaced under recent recall(free), most importantly make sure the DSG oil was replaced every 40k miles or 60k km...don't touch one that hasn't been done! Timing belt at 80k miles also.

I love the car, very comfortable with adequate poke. Did Dublin to Belfast recently with 58mpg, and wasn't holding back.
    Goodluck

So as long as it has a decent service record I should be ok.

Is the DSG oil change a specialist job or would my local mechanic be able to do it?

Specialist tools are required, I'll be going to George Dalton in portlaoise to do mine, €175 I believe.
Yeah, good service history and DMF done, mine went at 63k miles. Give her a good drive in S-mode too, should rev all the way up smoothly when you plant the foot...and tiptronic.
    What mileage/price you looking at?

Is it a B5.5 (older shape) or B6 (newer shape)?

Think they were Auto's in the B5.5, but DSG in the B6. If it's a 2005 B6 DSG, I'd avoid it like the plague. They only came in the 2.0Tdi, which hasn't a great record for reliability, nor do any of the early B6 models in general.

    That's an early B6 model :(

The only car less reliable than an early 06 Passat, is a late 05 Passat. My gut instinct would be to run away.

Would the 1.9tdi be more reliable than the 2.0tdi version.

Engine is better, but the 05/06 Passat B6 models all have a variety of different niggly issues. No auto box with the 1.9Tdi either if that's what you are looking for.

Baseline (no chrome on the windows) but with the Comfortline Alloys.

My book says there were 24,657 cars registered in Cork in 2005, so you might be right on it being a swimmer.

I would be aiming for at least a mid 08..

Would a '03 be DSG or slushbox? I always thought DSG didn't need a DMF

What improvements did they make? - did they change the DSG from the original.

DSG is basically a manual gearbox with electronically controlled gear changes. They do have DMF's too.

The DSG box isn't a problem when serviced correctly, the 2.0tdi PD engine seems to have some issues to be aware of.
Do your research and you'll be ok. That car in the link is too expensive for what it is tbh.

Nope but the earlier models did give a lot of trouble with the steering coloums, handbrakes and other things. The 08 ones would have a common rail engine too.

are DMF's a hard job to change themselves? not that it really matters I don't think I'd ever go near a Diesel at this stage

As with a normal manual, its a gearbox off job. The DSG box is a bit more effort to remove though.

I think VW should have stuck to the standard auto - alot less trouble.

They are not actually if the oil is changed regularly but if not they do give trouble. If I were you I would be looking for proof that it was maintained properly....

That is the problem with looking at Irish cars - any form of documented service is practically non-existent :D

Aye I know.. I service my own Passat at home but I keep all the receipts and use genuine filters etc. The recession will see a lot of cars without service. I know a lad with a 08 transit with over 250k on the clock and it was serviced once only...

MPG will be low allthough I forget the exact figures. If you are buying a 2.0 petrol there is much better options other than a Passat..
