    Hi Everyone

I am about to commence a Class 1 medical exam soon in order to determine my continuation in aviation.

I know we have an old thread knocking around about the for and against debate regarding where to take the initial Class 1 exam.

Basically I am asking for your recent opinions on where is the best location to do the initial Class 1 aside from the money saving aspect? As well as how did the exam go, how you found their flexibility or inflexibility as applicable?

    Thanks everyone

    John

Depends really where you will end up doing your CPL. I did IAA class 1 and CAA CPL and had no problems. Chatting to a lad that did a CAA class 1 and IAA CPL and he had to redo his class 1 with the IAA!!

There is a bit of a saving to be made initially but you'll have more options with an IAA initial class 1. You can always renew it up north for a lot cheaper.

If you are getting your first licence in Ireland, then you will need to obtain IAA medical. Renewals can be done in other JAA state, but thats if you already hold the licence and class 1 medical.
Best bet is to call iaa and see what they say.

The UK CAA will issue a UK Class 1 on the basis of an IAA medical for a small admin fee. I had an Irish medical and had to get the UK one issued for my initial licence issue. Ever since just my Irish one is fine; the IAA inform the CAA every time I renew my medical in Dublin.

I've only recently obtained a JAA class 1 medical cert from the UK CAA. Is it possible to do a PPL here in Ireland or will I have to go elsewhere? Would the IAA be able to convert it from a CAA to a IAA medical or how does this work? I have been unable to get any clarity on the issue. All help greatly appreciated.

On the Students Pilot Licence form, there is section where they ask the date of initial examination in ireland, but also an option for other countries if previously held the class 1 or 2. Your best bet is to call the IAA directly and find out
