    Hi,

have you any idea would they work with my Sora derailleurs or would I need to upgrade them too.

Also are they for 10 or 9 speed ? Thanks

    P.S. Im using a triple.

They're 10 speed. My guess is that they'd still work with 9 speed derailleurs, but i'm not 100% sure on that.

They'll work fine with the Sora derailleur, but you'll have to switch to a 10-speed cassette and chain. They won't work with a 9 speed cassette.

    Ooo shiny... me like..

I take it that they will still work with an 8 speed derailleur and chain - the problem is that accidentally shifting past the last cog will throw the chain off the sprocket and mayhem ensues.

8 speed chain won't work with a 10-speed cassette, it's too wide. But the derailleur is fine.

OK but if I keep the 8 speed chain, 8 speed derailleur and use a 10 speed shifter - will that work i.e. will the shifter move the derailleur across all 8 gears accurately? I accept that when the chain is in the 8th gear and I shift down then there are no more gears and the chain will jump off the last gear.

I suppose the basic question is: Do all shifters move the derailleur the same amount regardless of how many speeds/clicks they have?

No that won't work. The cassettes are the same width, just spaced differently, so each jump on the 10 speed is less than the jump on the 8 speed.
Your highest and lowest gears will work, but everything in between will be dodgy as hell and wear your chain and cassette quicker.

Aha I see... thanks for the explanation.

So, does that mean a derailleur is called a 8/9/10 speed because of the number of sprockets in the cassette that it is paired with i.e. a derailleur whether it be a Sora/105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace will work with 8/9/10 speed cassettes.
If so what are the advantages of a Dura-Ace over a Sora derailleur (apart from weight) - do they shift 'better' or does a better shifter give a better gear change?

mp31, you need to move to 10 speed! Using 8 speed these days is like using Windows 95 or Mac OSX Stray Cat or whatever. To entice you along the path towards 10 speed enlightenment, I have an Ultegra rear mech (10 speed, no less) for a knock-down price of €30 if bought with the shiny 10-speed shifters at aforementioned crazy price of €150. The mech is equally shiny, having been used on one 10 speed-enabled spin out to Summerhill & back on my TT bike.

    You know you want to...

    ..... 10 speed

The most expensive part of moving to 10-speed is in fact the shifters, so if you're already prepared to buy these, then another €50 will get you a 10-speed cassette and chain and hey presto you've got more gears.

More expensive derailleurs are not only lighter, but they're machined and built with more precision and using high-quality components, so they shift better and last longer. A 10-speed mech will typically only take a 10-speed chain (though you could probably get away with an 8 speed), because it's been finely tuned to accept a chain of that width.

An 8-speed mech will take a 10 speed chain because it's been designed to take a wider chain anyway, so the narrower 10-speed chain is not an issue.

Are there also not potential issues with running 8 speed chainrings with a 10 speed chain. I know with Campagnolo you should run 11 speed rings with an 11 speed chain as opposed to mixing 11 and 10 speed.

The teeth are machined narrower and I expect the narrower chain is narrower between the links to match with the teeth. Also the gap between the two chainrings is narrower (I have measured it!) on 11 speed v 10 speed and in theory the narrower chain might have an issue with the wider gap between the rings...

These might be issues with using an 8 speed chainset with the 10 speed chain, although I haven't tried this myself.

I do want 10 speed.... in fact I just want more SPEEEEEEED ;)

I'll take you up on your offer of the rear mech for 30 squid but I've already bought some shifters on ebay so can't buy yours (even though they are sooo shiny). Lemme know if you want to sell the rear mech at that price.
