Hey am currently renting a house. In the fireplace the is a copper pipe coming up through the ground presumably it's for installation for a gas fire but none has ever been fitted.

I have a feeling the answer is no, but I was wondering if it is safe to put a grate into the fireplace and use it as an natural/real fireplace ?

I'm assuming the copper pipe will melt with the heat which doesn't concern me other than the fact it could possible explode, but there is an off switch to the gas on the wall beside the fireplace heading to the copper pipe which would make it relatively safe, correct ?

    Thanks

EDIT : It's not a gas fireplace as such, it has a cast iron surround, it's for gas or coal, just that there is a gas pipe leading to it..

I was viewing an appartment recently, and the landlord said specifically that we could not use the fireplace. You may want to check that as well. Don't know if it's a question of insurance of it didn't work properly or he didn't want the place mucked up. Anyway, you might want to check.

Cheers, had a previous landlord tell me that also, same scenario, it had a copper pipe coming from the ground in the fireplace. I used it as a real fire anyway and all was well, cant help wondering if I was just lucky then, if I try it here I may not have the same luck and blow the place up :pac:

You most definitely NOT use the Firepalce for a real fire while the Pipe is connected. That is unless you have a death wish or like playing Russian roulette.
Don't you know that even Valve leak at times.
Make sure that the Pipe is Disconnected from the Valve and also put a blanking Cap on where the Pipe is disconnected from.
You may need to clear it with your Landlord first though.
