Just seen this too on the Beeb

    Hungarian airline Malev collapses

The Hungarian national airline Malev has folded after its financial situation became unsustainable.

"At 0500 GMT... after 66 years of almost continuous operation Malev will no longer take off," it said.

It came after the European Commission ordered Malev to repay various forms of state aid received from 2007 to 2010.

The sums involved amounted to 38 billion forints (130m euros; $171m; £108m), a sum equal to its entire 2010 revenue.

    doesn't look good.

Ya, they have been sniffing around there latly talking about reopening services out of Budapest. Obivously waiting for today, all plans in place, as business operators you do have to admire their ability to read a situation and be ready to act. For once I say well MOL.:D

The FR base at BUD was announced at least a week ago, I read it in AnnaAeroe and FLight Global.

Shame about MA, but they haven't been well for a few years. I think they were privatised then re-nationalised when it went south. They stopped longhaul about a year or 2 ago. Making ends meet since then, this demand was the nail in the coffin.

I'm sure FR were aware of the possibility of this happening. The spot a gap and go for it.

Where will they be stored in Shannon? In a hangar or on an apron?

EDIT: Let's hope they don't suffer the same fate as that old Iberia...

All are quite new aircraft that belong to leasing companies, they will be repainted and sent elsewhere within a few months.

This link shows there reg and construction number, showing 13 Malev aircraft being ferried to SNN.
    http://www.skyliner-aviation.de/regdb.main?LC=nav4&page=3

Top of the list is HA-LOJ; built in 2004.

In addition Wizzair are to open a base in BUD as well. This could be interesting as FR and WZ have never gone head to head like this so far in the European market. Having both LCC's based here will quash any chance of a Malev revival along the lines of Swissair/Swiss or Sabena/SN Brussels Airlines.

Credit card chargeback if you booked by CC. If you booked on debit card or cash directly you're out of luck.

Was it the DAA that impounded it looking for payment?

Indeed Just checked a random weekend trip to BUD from DUB next month costs less than €20 return!

Very sad to see them go though. They were nice to fly with and the staff had a real pride in their airline. Back in the good old days I had a gold frequent flyer card with them. Neglected to claim any awards though:(

No they were just moved to a remote stand, so that the air-bridge they were on could be used.

They don't owe any debts to the DAA.

No. There is a difference between a destination and a base.

My reading of their new PR puff piece is that is is a base, 4 aircraft intended to be based there.

That may not have been their plans before yesterday though!

Referring to an earlier poster who said a base was announced two weeks ago. Destination announced a couple of weeks ago, base yesterday.

Well FR will certainly have a pool of potential 737 Captains to hire from.

People are quick to criticise FR for moving in fast. But we can now all see which business model works and which doesn't.

So the crew from the plane that was impounded in Dub, how do they get home? Tumb a lift to SNN and board the Dash 8 with the crews from the incoming convoy of 737's?

Would it have been a good idea if FR just had some machines in SNN ready to roll when the Malev crews arrived in? So all then they would need is a few biro's, contracts and new ID badges for the Malev crews.
Then the ex Malev lads can fly the FR 73's back and take up their original routes tomorrow........wouldn't MOL love if it was that easy?

Different airline, different SOP's so it's not that easy. All crew would have to do an Operator Conversion Course in the sim. It will take months to bring any crew online.

That's assuming they pass the course. Failure rates from other airlines gone bust have not always been what you'd expect.

So expect any FR aircraft in BUD to be crewed by existing FR staff for the forseeable future.

As far as I know they were leased from an Irish leasing company.

ILFC who are "Irish" in terms of operations, registration etc. US firm in origins though.

Here is the original article from Anna Aero,

re-realising I realise my impression that it was a 'base' was mistaken. Looks like original plan is 5 new routes from existing bases:

You cant expect lcc and flag carriers to operate similar business models,i wouldnt expect fr to act any other way its business.

How many are in Shannon now??

Is there an airline in place to take up their order book. They have 15 Sukoi 100 Superjets on order

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,160 ✭✭✭✭L1011

The Superjet is being delivered so slowly I suspect they'll just delete the orders from the backlog to try and ensure they get closer to the original agreed dates with the other purchasers.

12 I think, but I'm not 100% on that!! Supposed to be 8 Spanair a320's coming to Shannon over the next few days aswell!

I see another Malev 737 HA-LOP on approach to Shannon at the moment, so how many is that so far, 13?

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

    http://www.independent.ie/business/european/ryanair-rushes-to-add-26-routes-as-malev-collapses-3009803.html

    Saturday February 04 2012
THE Irish arm of the ground-handling firm Servisair surrounded Hungarian flag carrier Malev's aircraft at Dublin airport yesterday.

Servisair is understood to be owed a significant amount of money from the collapsed airline. At least four of Servisair's vehicles were strategically placed around the Boeing 737 aircraft within hours of the national airline going bust.

Aircraft maintenance firm Dublin Aerospace has been engaged by the owner of the Malev aircraft, Los Angeles-based leasing firm IFLC, to secure possession of the property on its behalf.

The aircraft, which had been due to fly from Dublin to Budapest yesterday at 7.30am with 113 passengers, was due to be moved by Dublin Aerospace to a disused runway at Dublin Airport last night. It is thought that the Dublin Airport Authority isn't owed any significant amount of money by Malev.

What's the point of impounding a leased aircraft?
