Can you tax a car in the motor tax office without the notice, i.e. with just the reg?

No, you need the Motor Tax form. You could get one in there and fill it out.

I bought a second hand car 18 months ago, the car didn't have tax and I would have been waiting a week or two for the log book to arrive. I taxed the car in the local motor tax office just using the car reg.

Thanks. Is the chassis number required? My car is 30m away, and I'm not in a position to visit it. The renewal reminder is probably in it. :)

You can request a replacement PIN from motortax.ie. They will email it to you and you can then tax it online.

I.e. if you have a new (used) car you don'y have to go to the tax office for its first period you can just email them for a pin once it's in your name?

    That right?

I don't think you can do that with a new used, think the first time has to be in person.

No you can get a pin for a used car, bought one in November last and got a pin, but as I did not use the car until last month I had to get it signed off by a Garda . Just go onto the site and as long as the car has been transfered into your name it will give you a pin.
