Avensis Issues

    Hi all,
    2.0 D4D 2008 model.
Wife was driving car today, heard noise, all of a sudden car wont "steer". 2 warning lights come on on dash (Battery and something about water I believe)
Anyway she gets the car home with great difficulty.
I look into the engine and it appears a belt has slipped off. I suspect it has slipped off the waterpimp, power steering pump and alternator and whatever is powering them all (some part of the engine)
Does anyone know whether the timing belt is tied up in all this (I really hope and suspect not).
Also, would anyone have a rough idea of the price to fix? I can see the belt but wouldnt attempt this myself.
Also, is this car driveable without the power steering - she was finding it more difficult as the time went on and I suspect drving it without alternator and water pump (if only to get to a garage) is not the smartest move.
    Cheers for any guidance.

The diesel avensis has hydraulic power steering alright. Wouldn't recommend driving it.

    Timing belt is separate

You could manage in a pinch without the power steering but I wouldn't drive it 100 yards without the water pump being operational. In fact, don't even start it.

It should be an easy fix to get the belt back on for anyone half handy at all, and tighten it sufficient to get it to the garage if necessary.

On a 2008 car its unlikely that the belt came off for any reason other than a dodgy belt or it simply working loose over time in which case, I'd be looking toward whoever does your servicing and why it wasn't picked up.

08 avensis have timing chain, they changed from belt in july 06.

But even on the 05/06 models when the belt broke it never damaged the engine, its the way they were designed.
