Policy renewal: Third party extension question.

Don't know if insurance issues are allowed on thîs forum but I'll put it here anyway.

I'm going on 23 in April, have full licence since I was 18 and been insured with Axa since 19 in 2009.

This year if I renew my insurance this week they said I will not have third party extension anymore. They said I must be over 25 as they informed me in a phone call today wondering am I going to renew with them.

I badly need third party extension to drive other cars at home. And I feel let down by them.

Have I got any insurance law or law of the land to back me up here as I'm a long term customer now? Also they didn't send out any notification that terms and conditions on my insurance are due to change.

    Any help appreciated

Few company will give a 3rd party extension to under 25s. I don’t know if it is just me but I seem to remember having a lot more company’s offering 3rd party extension to under 25 last year than this year. Aviva will so it might be worth comparing prices with them, however their prices were not in any way competitive this year for me (over 200 increase on last year:rolleyes:) so I ended up going with AXA and becoming a namer driver on the other car at home. This worked out cheaper than the aviva quote.

Terms of your insurance havnt changed. Its a new policy your being offer and that has different clauses and entitlements. The fact its the same company as last year is irrelevant, its the same as if your going to a different company.

With all due respect, less than three years does not make you a 'long term' customer, you wouldn't qualify for a maximum no-claims bonus for starters.

Your question seems to imply that you might have acquired some legal rights because of the time you've been a customer, there is no such concept in Ireland when it comes to motor insurance. What happens with Axa when you've been with them for a really long time and you get older is that they will throw extras at you to hold on to you, such as giving you fully comp. cover when driving other cars, you're probably a long way off that stage.

If you don't like what they're offering, shop around and see if someone else will give you what you want, you'll be able to transfer your no-claims bonus.

I know Zurich offer driving of other cars for under 25's with a full licence but there arent that many more that do.Its too high a risk for alot of insurers to justify offering it.
