I was just wondering if people perceive non organic meat to be bad for health? I am thinking of chicken and fish in particular. Does the antibiotics given to the animals and fish effect us?

In the EU the use of antibiotics in feed is not allowed. Even in the states small quantities are added to foodstuffs and pass through the animals without being absorbed.

Those are fine in the right quantities. The benefits of farmed fish outweigh any risks, if you enjoy fish and could eat it 5 times a week then do so! Non organic chicken is fine too.

Thats an opnion bleg theres no way you can state that eating non organic is as safe as eating organic. Organic refers to the lack of chemicals present in the growing of a plant or raising of an animal. Non-organic meats contain certain amounts of antibiotics and bovine growth hormone. Non-organic fruits and vegetables can contain pesticide chemicals.

I believe that most of todays health issues are caused by the food we eat. Primarly because over the past 60 odd years we have interfered with it so much to increase yield, shelf life and suppliers profits. Even though your body is designed to heal itself, your body is burdened by these extra toxins which overwork your cellular metabolism and detoxification systems. This effects our immune systems and leaves you prone to disease.

I also believe that the raising of chickens in battery farms is cruel and we should always try purchase free range where possible.

Cruelty issues aside, most of your post is simply scaremongering.

The EU enforces the highest food quality standards in the world which I think is often under-appreciated. Personally I don't believe there are any real nutritional or health benefits from organic produce over non-organic.

With regards to bovine growth hormone, organic meet will contain it as it is naturally occurring. Artificial growth hormone is not an issue as it is illegal within the EU.

Antibiotics and animals medicines in general tend to be expensive and usually require prescriptions from vets. The use of drugs means that an animals produce e.g. milk/meat must be withheld for a certain period of time i.e. after a drug is administered an animal cannot be sent to the abbatoir for x amount of days. Testing is carried out to ensure compliance.

Records of drugs used must be maintained by farmers which are subject to inspection by the department of agriculture who will issue fines if records are not satisfactory.

Lastly is it not cruel to withhold medicine if an animal is sick, what do organic farmers do?

I,m invovlved in farming although mainly tillage now but my dad has animals and I can verify the paperwork has to be stringent, As does the records of what we add to the soil.

In general I would ask myself how far my food has travelled, Pomellos are lovely, but they come from china or japan, what chemicals are on them to make them last.

Is it ok to eat all fish five times a week or should you keep tuna to once a week. I try to but organic but it;s just so much more expensive.

You could try rabbit, you can't get any more organic than that....unless they're eating sprayed crops:confused:
