dell m1710 screen Blank on startup

    hi all,

I have a dell M1710 laptop. recently the laptop had started to freeze when i went onto you tube (fullscreen mode), it then would flash the BSOD for a few mins then crash totally ( couldn't read the error code as the flashing was too quick),
when i would try to restart the laptop would start with a black screen (no boot screen or anything) there was power to the screen, it changed slightly from when its turned off.

When i tried an external monitior same thing just black but the activity led on the monitor shows green (This means an active connection i think).

After the laptop had cooled down and battery was removed the laptop would start as normal and then later if i went back to you tube it would crash again.

Of late this has worsened (Didnt need to go to you tube for this too happen) and now the laptop will not show anythin on screen at all, i havent said wont boot because i think i can hear the laptop boot through hd noses etc.

i have tried reinstalling the Nvida reccomend Drivers but this had no effect

I reckon this means graphics card is gone but tbh im not sure, i did take apart the laptop (with the help of a more knowledgable friend) six months ago and clean fans, reapply heat paste etc. but it worked fine until the last few weeks.

    Graphics card Geforce go 7950
    os win 7 64 bit
    processor intel core duo t7200
    Ram 4gb

all these specs are to the best of my remember cause i cant check them.

I've had the laptop since 2008 and never had any probs so i really have got my moneys worth from it, but at the same time i would really like to salvage it if i can as it is a great laptop.

Anyone any ideas on what my best course of action is. will i be able to repair or replace the Graphics card.

i have heard of people "baking" graphics cards to repair them (i assume this remelts solder in the card) anyone any experience of this?

Thanks in advance for any help!!:)

Provided that this is GPU fault and you don't really care if you make it worse (and you will) you can try heating a motherboard in oven, using hot air or whatever. Most probable sequence of events is: Your laptop will work for several weeks then (or not) die again, you will try baking it again and it will die after few days and then its gone.

Provided that you do care, you will need to find good and honest technician who will replace GPU for you which will cost 100+ euros.

Second option is the recommended because with "tools" like oven or hot air you do not control temperature. And this can make more damage to the board making further repairs unfeasible.

There is much more to this topic and I've seen a good one on boards about reballing Nvidia chips just can't find it right now. In short: don't do it :) replacement is the only fix

im not 100 percent but im pretty sure the graphics card is not soldered to the motherboard in theis model,

I think its in a soxket almost like the processor

ill let you know when i open it up

i think it is just the graphics card you can stick in the oven, if you stick the board in it will just melt ???

well, obviously.. what do you expect a circuit board to do..?!

the graphic card is resettable into the socket.
