basicly your only buying a badge as the 1.6/8 usually sold here are the most basic and low spec models. you might buy a high spec ford mondeo for the same kind of money. but if you really want a bmw or audi go for it.. maybe check some of the uk sites. they usually have higher spec cars

Yeah, it's a trouble if you don't want to go over 1.8. Basically people that buy 1.6 or 1.8s aren't bothered to get the extra goodies.
Example? Compare the 316d ES and the 335i.

    Neither. MERCEDES.

Strange choice of 2 cars, one is rear wheel and the other front wheel, completely different driving experiences.

If you want rear wheel look at bmw, lexus, mercedes.

1.8t A4 wouldn't be so bad if you can insure it. Otherwise go for a 318i. Avoid the 1.6 in either.

Regarding the specs, I know someone with a 318i M Sport and it's got at least 7-8k in extras so there are exceptions to the rule.

There's also the infamous 1.9/2.0TDi. There should be plenty of them around with the odd one being decently specced.

If you are going to be limited by engine size to 1.8 then I would choose an A4 1.8t over a 316i everytime. Yes the 3 Series is rwd but in 1.6 316i form it is a waste of time, it's 115bhp verses the 163bhp of the A4 1.8t. Either that or buy something else.

BTW the 318i is 2.0 litre.

Thanks for the replys i don't really care ablout if it's rear wheel drive or high spec I just want a either one whichever has least problems and better fuel consumption ?? Would the 1.8 t be real heavy on juice

Have you considered a Golf GTI MkV, its a serious car and you'd get a pretty nice one the same year as the audi or bmw.

    It's a 2.0L but that's only €68 euro a year more than a 1.8.

    Review here: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/usedcartests/242269/buyers_guide_vw_golf_gti_mkv.html

For the 200bhp power the mpg is good and it shouldn't be that hard pick up a nice one with low miles. It's worth a look.
