Has anybody spread -cold set an old road bike frame? I have one running an old 6speed but want to put a more modern groupset and wheels on it and wondering is it handy enough to do?

Yes, I done it with my old Peugeot, nothing to it. It was originally a 6 speed too. Modern transmission on it now.

Frame/fork straightening tool, dropout alignment tool and a frame alignment tool or you could just jump on some 2x4 ;)

I've done it the sheldon way. Its a reasonable enough job, easy does it though.

Get the drops properly done, there a pain to get right with DIY equipment

cheers-ill be leaving it into a good rothar shop for some bits and pieces so I guess they can do it easily enough. Anybody recommend a good northside shop?

Careful spreading the chainstays, make sure they're evenly spaced cos I got it wrong on an old raleigh I have and the back wheel never sat straight and I kept on breaking spokes. Use the string around the head tube back to the rear dropouts to measure the distance from the string to the seat tube.

Sheldon Brown was one if a kind.
