I want an inkjet printer for normal university related use. In addition to printing text and images I need to be able to copy and scan images. Photo quality does not need to be perfect and I will print approximately 30 black and 5 colour pages per month.
Wireless printing would be a nice extra but most important is that ink prices are cheap. I will more than likely refill my own black cartridges so I don't want one that messes up after refilling.

All suggestions welcome and you can let me know how yours does.
    Thanks.

Epson or Canon (Reccomended). Make sure you can get cheap compatibles from the usual places www.inkjet.ie, www.justmedia.ie etc. Brothers are also cheap enough to get replacement ink usually I think. Your better off buying compatibles than refilling ink, as refilling can cause air to get in and wreck havok with the printer

Heatons are selling an HP 1050A at the moment for €29.90.
When the ink runs out, just buy another as its cheaper than replacing the cartridges.

Inks in the new machines are only 33% to 50% full.

    Amazon or ebay the ink.

Yeah, exactly. Some new printers come with 50% less inks to get you started. HP are a fairly expensive machine to run, better off buying a machine for a bit more where you can find cheap inks for it.

    very quick check to do
Find a price for the ink for the printer you are thinking of buying (let's say €20), then google to find the page yield for that cartridge (say 400 pages)

Divide price by page yield (20.00/400) to give you 0.05 or 5 cent a page. (just use the price for one cartridge)

Remember though the page yield is normally for just text (5% coverage) so if you printed out a full A4 size photograph you'd end up with 20 times more ink used.

Try it for different brands and you'll be surprised. I've got figures of over 15c for cheap printers and below 2c for the dearer brands!

Of course if you are only printing a few pages you'll have to wait a long time to get back the extra money you spent

Let's say a printer was €50 more expensive and 10c cheaper per page, you would have to print 50/0.10 = 500 pages before you actually started to save money.

    See maths is useful ;)

Kodak printers while a bit dearer have the cheapest replacement inks.

this one is €89 and inks only €9.99 big size cartridges.
