What is auto rev?

My brother-in-law has just bought a 99 Megane. When stationary with engine running (e.g., at traffic lights), the rev counter fluctuates between 10 and 20. Up and down, up and down. My own car and most others just hovers at about 10, as I recall.

He thinks it's a modification that the previous owner made, called "auto rev". Apparently it's to make the car feel like a race car.

Seems far fetched to me, not to mention a waste of petrol.

So what's the story, is it a feature that's been installed or is it a fault? It seems odd to me..

Idle control valve fault? Although it would normally just rev straight up high or cut out would it not?

But if he's happy with the auto rev mod he could always leave it be :D

Thanks. Certainly seemed like a fault to me anyway. But it's intermittent - sometimes it just hovers at 10 or 8, quite normally.

Sounds like a split pipe letting air in.

Certainly not normal although some of my previous cars did it when cold. Once warmed up it always stopped but I never investigated it any more to see if it was a fault

Thats a little known feature designed to lessen the chance of stalling at the lights.

Had this problem on a Peugeot, it was a dirty MAPs (manifold air pressure) sensor

That's what he reckons too! Apart from it being a modification to make his Megane feel like a race car of course..

My rallycar had something like this for warming up the engine in the cold mornings but it was a deliberate map installed on the ecu. Trust me to put that mod in a Megane using the ecu method would make the mod worth more than the car :)

I'd be looking for a faulty vacuum pipe somewhere. I do know some cars have a system where when you release the clutch you get a slight increase in revs which as stated above is to reduce the risk of stalling.

Just when you think you've read it all.......seriously FFS!

I won't post my opinion of someone who could actually think that on a public forum!

Could be a dirty throttle body/throttle position sensor.
Also check the coolant temp sensor.
Idle control valve is the 3rd option.

I'd tell him to get it fixed, it's embarrassing enough driving a Megane without attracting attention by sounding like a boy racer revving the engine! :p

Thanks for the tips lads. I'll clip him round the round and tell him to take it to a garage. Auto rev indeed.
