    hi all,
we were talking in the pub a few weeks ago, and one of the guys knows an old guy, who is a relation of his, who lives up the mountains and it was said that he had a hardbook of maps which are the same as the old folio maps in the national archives in Dublin.
I have seen the maps in the national archive before, and they are quite big, and show a small bit of a parish. the maps are about 3 foot by 2 foot, and were in big sheets, very old big enough that it was hard to handle them, and they were pretty delicate!

if this legendary book does exist, and assuming it hasnt been eaten by damp and cats and moths, so in fair to good condition, what would it be worth approx?
from reading some of the opinions and posts on other threads here, a picture and a photo and or date is needed, but obviously in this case it is not possible!
    thanks

You're not even certain that it exists and you want to know how much it's worth?

Planning to "borrow" them from the old man?

If this guy you met in the pub invites you 'up the mountains' to see this book, just make sure that someone you trust knows where you're going and wear a GPS tracker.

And bring a working lantern or flashlight, the chances are your car wont start and you'll have to flee across the moors in darkness.

Well, you haven't given us much to go on.

What most enthusiasts would really be looking to find out is:

    1. how rare are they ?
    2. how beautiful a set of maps like this would be ?
    3. how they were made and what skill was involved in producing the book?
    4. When were they coloured and are they original ?
    5. An appreciation about how fascinating it is that the location has changed so much from the state of the area at the time of the map production in contrast to the state of the area at the moment

The tone of your post suggests that you and some guy down the pub can swindle the maps out of the hands of some old man up the mountains , and you want to know if it's worth the effort.

I hope I'm wrong, but people who collect and deal with antiques come across this type of deception all the time.

Im not saying that is your intention, but just that is what the tone of your post suggests.

It is of course very possible that you intend the beneficiary to be the old man himself, although you haven't said as much.

I suggest you stop posting now. I am not sure about the legality of the course of action you're proposing. What I do know is that if you are actually serious about your approach it's 100% morally questionable and as such has no place in our forum.

On the other hand, if you're "just" baiting the other regular posters here, I can assure you that won't be tolerated either.
