Hey well I just worked out my BMR and I'm clueless as to what it means

    I got BMR 8123
and my daily caloric needs 12591

So as I am trying to lose weight, I'm wondering is my BMR bad!

So what you are trying to say is that you have calorie requirements equal to the typically recommended daily allowance of 5 adult males?

What height, weight and activity levels to you have on a daily basis?

No you see Im a complete novice on what is a BMR etc I used a calculator on channel4/bodies http://www.channel4embarrassingillnesses.com/myhealthchecker
So entered in my height 4ft 10, weight 76.8kgs and I work out 6 times a week cardio and toning and walking, just started building up jogging as well. I'm about 5 weeks in now on the exercise

It doesn't seem to allow decimal points. So you probably entered your weight as 768kg.

Thanks I checked again and got a better result! still not sure if thats good or bad, my basic understanding is the BMR is what you need/use each day just to exist! so then then your daily caloric needs are what you need to maintain you weight or am I wrong there!

Sorry if I am sounding like an idiot:o:)

BMR is essentially the amount of energy you'd expend at rest.

But no one is ever fully "at rest", so activity level multipliers come in. Even a sedentary person moves about a bit during the day, so it's multiplied by 1.2, more activity has higher multiplyers.

It's at best, a good approximation. Find out your BMR, multiply it by the relevant activity level, probably 1.55 for yourself to get daily maintenance kcals (ie the amount you need to eat to maintain your current weight, roughly).

    Find more here http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

Also, keep in mind that it doesn't really matter if you eat 800-1,000kcals for a few when you're maintenance level's 1,600 if you go out and binge your ar5e off for the next couple of days.

Figuring out a weekly/monthly kcal need and targeting to be below that when you add up all your days makes far more sense imo (and no, you can't just not eat for a few days at the end of the month to balance it all out, before anyone asks :D)

based on my bmr and x x1.55 for moderate exercise 3-5 times a week, my daily calorie take should be 3145.25 Kcal. Thats a bit hefty. I get no where near that. how come im not dropping the weight then?

Do you accurately count the calories of what you eat? And have you estimated your activity level (and got your bmr) correctly?

so your BMR before the multiplier is 2029? That sounds wrong tbh, I think you need to recalculate

    Not necessarily...

I'm a 90kg 25 year old dude of just above average height and mine's around that.

I don't necessarily think the multiplier is the correct option to use tho, but it's simple.

I prefer to estimated my total weekly kcal output due to exercise, divide it by 7 and add it to BMR*1.2 for a daily guidline maintenance amount. And knock 15% to 500+kcal daily off it for weight reduction levels.

yep. 5'8, 208lbs, male age 28. exactly what comes up.

Im doing crossfit 3 times a week and gym/kettlebell circuit another 2.

been eating primal since January so havent been counting cals that much. But I know what 3145 cals involves, and theres no way on earth im eating that much

    No, "Thehamo" is a dude.

    3,145/1.55 = 2,030!

    EDIT: see above

There seems to be a margin of error - whereby if you're 300ish under or over nothing happens.

And there's the issue of binge drinking/eating, or having one day out of every few where you go wildly over your kcals levels and balance out the previous week/days.

Then there's the water retention thing, cortisol, macro content etc etc.

That's all assuming you've calculated food intake correctly, which almost everyone fails to do.

seems to be the case alright. If my daily calorie needs are in the 3000's well then ive definietly not been hitting the require calorie deficiency to hit the regular weight loss. Im rejigging my diet this week and trying a few different things to see if it makes any difference. Also, was gonna aim for 200 cals a day but might have to up it to at least 2500..

    Yeah 200 daily'd be a bit low :D

If you're CF'n 3x per week and doing KBs 2x and taking in a true weighed and measured 2,000kcals with sufficient protein (1b/lb bw minimum), you won't last long before you hate training or pig out in a big way.
