    I had my car NCT'd today, it's a used import so the test date(April) and the original date of reg. Nov. 2002 are out of sinc..
    By my calculations my car is less than 10 years old on its due test date and I should have been issued with a 2 year cert., but according to the tester as it's a 2002 reg. the month of the year is irrelevent.
    I thought I might get a few opinions here before I follow it up tomorrow.

    It goes on its anniversary (if less than 10). So, if it was due Nov 2010,, you'd only get it until Nov 2012

    Where does it show that the original date of registration was November? Normally the vlc document will say what month it was initially registered in the country you imported it from, this is most likely April, it doesn't matter what month or date it was registered in Ireland.

    It won't matter wither way, once June 2011 passed anything which is 10 years old is 1 year. doesn't matter if it's done 3 months early or not it's still 1 year.

    Test due date is 18/04/2012 (Tested today)
    Irish re-reg. 18/04/2010
    B1 on Irish VRC gives original date of UK reg.29/11/2002.
    This makes the car 7 months short of the the 10 year rule for a 1 year test.

    I was wondering about it last year, as my car was produced on March 2003, but imported and first registered in Ireland on July 2010.
    NCT done then (July 2010) so it was valid until July 2012.
    That's what I was wondering if on July 2012 will I get a 2 years cert until July 2014, as this seemed correct way, as during test in July 2012, car would not be 10 years old yet, and therefore it wouldn't be it's 10th first registration anniversary NCT.
    However my problem dissappeared, as my wife crashed and wrote this car off :p

    Nonetheless, I personally think you should get 2 years valid certificate until April 2014, as during test due date (April 2012) car is not 10 years old, and therefore it's not the 10 anniversary NCT.

    Moreover, it's not up to NCT centre to decide, neither to company who operates NCT.
    It's all described in legislation:
    (2) The test due dates for a vehicle mentioned in paragraph (1) are:

    (a) from the commencement of these Regulations until 31 May 2011, the anniversary dates mentioned in paragraph (1) and each subsequent biennial of those dates, and

    (b) from 1 June 2011, the anniversary dates mentioned in paragraph (1) and—

    (i) from the tenth anniversary of first registration of the vehicle, each subsequent anniversary of those dates, and

    (ii) in any other case, each subsequent biennial of those dates.

    Few definitions from the same SI:
    “first registration” means the date on which a vehicle was first registered, irrespective of country of registration, or where only the year of first registration is known, that year, in combination with the day and month of first registration in the State and “first registered” is to be read accordingly;

    “anniversary of first registration” means a date that is one or more years after the date on which a vehicle was first registered;

    Source : http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2009/en/si/0567.html

    So as you can see, vehicle has to be tested annually, from tenth anniversary of first registration.

    Your vehicles first registration was in Nov 2002. I assume there is no doubt about month.
    Tenth anniversary of first registration, according to above definition, comes at 10 years after date of first registration, which comes in November 2012.
    Therefore, in April 2012, your vehicles didn't go through it's 10th anniversary, and as so, can't be treated by NCT like it did, so they must issue 2 years cert.

    That's my understanding, and thing seems to be really clear.

    If they (NCT) don't agree with this, I would go to court, and there is no chance to loose that case IMHO.

    That's how it used to work. Not any more.
    From few years, imported cars have NCT due date as anniversary of first registriaon in Ireland - not in home country.

    It won't matter wither way, once June 2011 passed anything which is 10 years old is 1 year. doesn't matter if it's done 3 months early or not it's still 1 year.

    The problem is, that OP's car at NCT due date which is April 2012, won't be 10 years old yet.
