Possible charter change

Throwing this one out for discussion...

    The charter says
If you're trying to sell something consider adverts.ie, if you want to link it here, please pm a mod first to check. This covers used equipment, website links, product promotions or race / event promotion. We're happy for regular posters to recommend goods and services, but new posters doing so may find their recommendations deleted. (This because of the growing frequency of new posters signing up to advertise businesses).

What are the pros and cons of allowing people to put up adverts for equipment in the Gear & Equipment subforum? What's the feeling in the forum?

the cycling ads subforum seems to have been successful, I've think it'll work here too

Post count > X and then no problems as long as its members selling second hand gear and not people hawking their events and physio services.

I post a fair bit, can I sell medical advise?

I don't see any problem with people promoting their events in the event section.

    Just no spamming.

We do allow people to promote their events, although commercial operators are supposed to clear this with the mods first. Endless thread bumps and sockpuppeting will draw our wrath.
Race promoters should also be aware that if there is a discussion on here, they have to take the rough with the smooth. Even the best organised events are going to get some criticism (too busy! too crowded! too expensive! water in cups!) and other events will get more...

I don't see why not. Think of all the runners with shoes bought in error (less than 20 miles on the clock) and people upgrading from one Garmin model to another. Good to have somewhere to post those, as they won't get much visibility on adverts.ie. Non-commercial only though.

What's broken, what are you trying to fix?

    Good question. It's a combination of -
Gear and Equipment is very quiet - there have been a few threads deleted in there for selling things, because it's against the charter - some other forums (or maybe its just Cycling) seem to be able to manage a sales subforum without things exploding - using Gear and Equipment would mean it's isolated for those who aren't interested, but available to those who are.

Plus my uncontrollable urge to poke at things :)

From the front page in the evenings I notice there's a very active sales subforum in the airsoft forum. People with guns, real or pretend, seem to be very active at night the country over.

While we are on the discussion of charter change, any chance we can change the charter on drug discussions. It's utterly nonsensical. Why on earth would an athlete sue Boards.ie because some random poster thinks a US female sprinter (for good reason) is cheating?

If this certain athlete was to sue every time an accusation about her was mentioned on the internet, she'd be flat broke from the astronomical legal costs she'd have to pay!

Well, the ban on drug talk is because that kind of accusation is libellous if untrue. It's not just a rule from this forum, it's a general thing across boards. Yeah, any given athlete, or car dealer, or restaurant, is unlikely to sue, but I'm pretty sure the legal team gets enough **** to deal with anyway and wouldn't be keen on us opening the door to more. If you (or woddle or ecoli or anyone else) wants to have that debate with them, fine, but I have no interest in pursuing it.

The ban on selling stuff is internal to this forum, so it's easy enough for us to change. (At least I assume it is, but I don't actually know how easy it is to change a charter. Maybe it's really complicated) The question is, do we want to? Can we come up with some simple rules for ads, or would it be an enormous pain in the arse?

Various forums, such as the cycling already mentioned, will allow relevant selling threads. Occasionally get people selling skis or boards on WinterSports but not sure what running gear I might want to buy second hand, other than maybe a spare ANT stick for the Garmin.

One way of doing it would be let people put up links to their adverts.ie listing, if you end up with loads of those kind of thread then could end up needing to stick them all in the one thread after a while, otherwise they will just fall off the front page as things sell so won't be much of an issue.

When hunny was still around *sob*, she used to let sales of gear if you asked. I shifted alot of stuff using on ART and some people got some great deals.

    Question.
If I found a good deal online, bought something and wanted to tell someone about it, is it ok to post the URL of that site?

Sounds fine to me once it doesn't turn commercial.

    Ray maybe it could go something like this (see the classified section);

    http://www.runnersforum.co.uk/

That site might give you a few ideas for this place too ;)

The cycling sales area has been mentioned a few times. My thoughts on it would be that how it's regulated and modded is a little over the top.

For me the benefit of buying something in a forum like this should be that I can get feedback on the item for sale, from both the seller and other users.

So if the proposal is to have discussion limited so as to prevent people other than the seller comment on it's suitability/value etc. for a prospective buyer then there's no point in having it.

Hunny is always around, and watching :-)

Kayaking has a sales thread. Links to adverts.ie and private sales only. But we are a lot smaller with a very quite forum full of polite people. I do agree that a post count of 8-10 posts before sales would cut out a lot of messing.

ok, where did that leave us ? I've an unwanted GPS type item I'd like to shift, and ART seems the right place to do so (I'm carefully not saying what, as that might be advertising!).

So, can I post about it here, or should I put it on adverts and put up with tyre kicking from the hoi polloi ?

Let me put up a definite proposal and a poll, to decide by next weekend...
