I need to send a 1kg packet to the UK standard post.
It costs €7.50 with An Post. You can post from your local Post Office.
    It costs €16.30 with CityPost.
I phoned CityPOST and was told that it has to be collected.
You cannot bring it to the depot!!!!!!!!.

You won't get cheaper than An Post.

Loads of couriers, but none cheaper

some couriers can be cheaper when you get to 5kg+ (eg PostPlus), but for up to 2kg An Post are definitely cheapest

and you can't bring it to an An Post depot either - it has to be a post office.

Depots are areas for sorting and directing parcels - they don't need the hassle of having the odd person drop a parcel in, get it stamped up and put through the system - more hassle than it worth.

I'm after using An Post to send a registered package to the US this morning. I was given a tracking number but when I went to the An Post website the tracking number could not be found. Is there a certain length of time before the package enters the system?

Yes, you may wait for it to be scanned into the system.

Should be noted too, that even as its registered, once it leaves ireland there's nothing An post can do for you.

Does the An Post tracking number still work once the package has left the country? It's going to the US.

It might be. An post just say

"An Post track Registered Post International up to dispatch from the Republic of Ireland. Online tracking is not available to every country. Registered Post International receives secure handling and is signed for on delivery"

When it gets to the local distribution centre it will get scanned in before leaving for one of the main hubs. So anytime from about 5.30pm - about 10pm.

Go to the USPS.com website and once your item enters the US you should be able to track it on the USPS website. But it is hit and miss. I send a lot of items over to the missus over there and some items show up and some dont on the tracking facility. In some cases they already get to her before the tracking info updates.

Im using Post Plus all the time now - up to 2kg weight collected at your door for 7.95. AND it will be tracked. www.postplus.ie

Just checked its €17.95 with PostPlus versus €7.50 with An Post to the UK.
And a packet/parcel is €7.95 with PostPlus versus €7.50 with An Post to the Ireland & NI
