Registration numbers

Firstly, does anyone know where I can find out, preferably on a month by month basis, the number of vehicles registered, in any given year? Secondly, are the index numbers issued sequentially, 1,2,3, etc. and are they issued in that order to all mechanically propelled vehicles, including buses, motorbikes, trucks, on a first come first served basis?
The reason I ask is because I have a 97 car with the index 555. The car was first registered in mid April of 97 and I just thought that was a very low number for three and a half months registrations. Taking commercial vehicles and motorbikes out of the mix would seriously reduce the number of cars registered even more! Were there that few cars registered, or am I missing something?
    Thoughts please, thanks.

The number could have been reserved until the car was delivered?

Usually sequentially (bar perhaps block booking of numbers by dealers) in a first come first served basis starting at #201 from 1993-2011 but starting from #1 from this year(2012) onwards. Numbers below 201 were for sale in a non sequential pattern though numbers in the normal series could also be booked.
What county are you in and what's the car?

The car is a Jaguar Sovereign and was first registered to Kingspan Holdings (company car) in Cavan. Maybe as mentioned, the number was reserved for some reason?

Was it registered in Cavan? 555 mightn't be too far off the mark if so.

I assume it was, given the Cavan reg plate and the Cavan purchaser. Does that mean that the numbers are further split/divided on a county by county basis. Are the numbers not just issued countrywide and allocated as such, with the county in question just being a matter of chance, if you get my drift. Thanks

Each county has its own series of numbers.

Thanks, that helps to explain it somewhat. It makes a bit more sense now.
