looking at 2005 the newer models of those versions ie the b7 a4 and the e90 320d. which is a better one for reliabilty. what should I expect to pay for a decent one with a nice colour eg either silver or black. which is the one to go for

Have you driven both? They're quite different to drive (FWD vs RWD) so a quick test drive should help you to decide which one you want. I have an E46 and I find it much better to drive than my brothers Audi A4 B6. The 320d power delivery is much smoother than the 130bhp TDI where the power comes in a lump before running out of steam.

    yes,

quiet like the idea of having 163 bhp in the bmw for a 2.0. the 1.9 tdi seems to mostly come in 115 bhp which is dissapointing since the tax is quiet high anyway. only thing turning me off the bmw is all the horror stories of turbos and swirl flaps and such. i dont know how many treads were done in the last few days saying avoid bmw diesels. would €8000 buy a 2005 modelof either or would you need to be spending more?

Well as a general rule, especially with cars that require such precise maintenance and have records of expensive issues, buying the cheapest one for sale is usually not a good idea.

IMO the 1.9tdi audi would be the most reliable engine by far over the 2.0tdi or the BMW's 2.0d. It would also be the cheapest to get parts for(engine) but is the least powerful, noisiest and harshest of them too.

You could remap the 1.9. If done properly and driven sensibly you could narrow the power deficit considerably.

If you're worried about the swirl flaps and they are still on it, have them removed. Should cost less than EUR 100...
