Friends and family restricting happiness, how to deal?

I've decided recently that I need to lose some weight to get back into shape but my friends and family don't seem very supportive about this. It's not that I'm thin already and they're just worried but it seems to be jealously?

If I go for fruit over processed food I get smart remarks thrown at me, if I don't drink at parties and explain why I get looked down on and if I say I can't meet with them at a certain time as I intend to be at the gym then they get really annoyed? What is it with Irish people not supporting health and fitness, they have such a stigma about it! In any other European country you would be encouraged more than anything!

I've tried to just brush it off but it's really started to get to me as not one person has been supportive to me:( Does anyone else have this?

Take no notice and when they really annoy you, pop on your ipod and go out walking etc. It will calm your frustration with them and it will wipe the smile off there face in a few months when you have a fab body and a healthy lifestyle.

Well done and keep it up!

They'll do it with anything. I've just had a woman crying to me for an hour because she wants to breastfeed her new baby, but everyone around her is busy telling her she's a fool, she'll neglect her other children, she'll turn herself into a cow, and she'll never wear make-up again.

If you decided to go back to college, you'd get a different version of it, or if you took up hang-gliding or charity work, there'd be people objecting and making it difficult.

You have to own your decision, say "This is what I'm doing, get used to it, it's not up for your approval," and get on with your life.

Irish people are just insecure about every thing! Every time you make a healthy choice they are unconsciously questioning their own actions and it's making them feel uncomfortable, some friends well adjust and some might just join you, but for now you should try and spend more time around health people, so join a club or class etc, best of luck with the changes.
