Anyone have any idea of how energy efficient these things are? Was gonna invest in a wood burning stove but this may be a cheaper alternative?

I would recommend the stove - we got one recently and they are fantastic. The heat off them is unbelievable. Have not had to turn on the heating in that room since we got it (and it's a large combined kitchen/living room). Love it.

I got one of those last year for €129. While it looks good on the wall the motor for the flame effect is a noisy b'stard. Sometimes its grand then at other times it can sound like a tug boat. Wouldn't recommend getting one.

Cheers for the advice, was very close to picking one up today, maybe a wood burning stove is the way to go, anyone have any idea where ya can get a good deal on one?

    Its cheap for a reason.

Its more about the asthetic look of it than the actual performance of it.The performance of it is basicly crap.

If you want a wall mounted fire that actually gives off alot of heat, then get the real thing fitted..

It will cost you a bit more than 99 euro though.

Stove would be 8 or 9 cent / kwh for heat (coal/bruiquettes*)
Electricity 16-18 cent / kwh unless you have a night meter and and running the fire at night.

*bought at a decent price by shopping around not bought at the local petrol station/spar/centra etc with an enormous mark up.

    400 euro for 184 bales.

Any idea about the cost of a standard gas fire....

B&Q were selling off a wall hung flueless gas fire for €260 last week. Focalpoint Midnight.
If its only as a secondary heat source it might be ideal

Sorry got my message mixed up, I was actually referring the cost to run one in comparision to briquettes or electric....

Do you connect these to the calor gas canisters? or Bord Gais?

    bord gais 6-7c / kwh
    bottled gas 18-20c / kwh

old style gas fire grate sends 60% of heat up the chimney = 15c / kwh heat
slightly more modern convector style sends 33% up the shiney = 9c / kwh heat
flueless gas inserts / wall fires are 100% efficient so 6-7c/kwh
