    Hi all,

Been reading through some posts here, and think I will contact Tony at satellite.ie.
Before I do, is it possible to have a sat that will carry english and french channels?
Is there an option via sky or upc?
Can i use the mothers unused sky sat and get a box or something? Sorry for the vagueness but just want to pay for the job to be done without buying gear I dont need.

If there is a thread here already I missed, I would appreciate being pointed to it, if not, maybe others will benefit from this thread.

    Thanks
    Irish

    Good Morning Irish,

Yes Tony from satellite.ie is a great guy and will give you great service and help and can also arrange installation.

Yes you can get a satellite dish that can carry English and French Free to air channels.
You will also require a satellite-Set top box (not a sky one).
The one dish with multi LNB's recieving signal from two satellites Astra 28E for English Free channels and Astra 19E for French and German Free channels.

In relation to sky and upc, I dont think you will need them. I would get Free To Air satellite as above, loads of good English, French and German channels.

You can use an old Sky dish, but it would be a challenge and you could lose signal in certain weather. I would replace the dish with a new 80cm dish, perfect for the job.

    Freesat channels from 28E http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels

Free to Air channels from 19E http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-19.2E-fta.php
You can also get more French Free channels on other satellites if you look at Atlantic bird 3 and Eorobird 9.

Free Irish Saorview channels http://www.saorview.ie/channels-services/ (You would require a tv aerial, compatiable tv or set top box for the Saorview channels)

5W might be a better option for FTA stuff than 19E as IIRC it has some of the main French public channels that Astra dont have.

Its been a couple of years since Ive had access to these satellites though so the situation may have changed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭FRIENDO

Ye, I think your right atlantic bird 3 (5W) may have better French public channels.

Atlantic Bird 3 (5W) French FTA
    http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?&pos=5W&standard=All&ordre=freq&filtre=Clear&cl=fra

19E would have a different selection of French FTA
    http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?&pos=19.2E&standard=All&ordre=freq&filtre=Clear&cl=fra

I would generally watch Arte (would sometimes show english language movies), Montagne TV and TV5 Monde on 19E.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭irishproduce

    Thanks for the replies guys.
Sorry what may seem like silly questions but are you saying all of the channels on that link http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?pos=5W&standard=All&ordre=freq&filtre=Clear&cl=fra would be available to watch? Wife is French you see and it looks like there is a decent selection there. Is this likely to cost a fortune?
If you can't answer, I am going to ring that company satellite.ie during this week anyway.
    Thanks

Irish produce if you want you can combine your existing dish with what you buy and you will receive English and French channels on the 1 receiver. You say that you already receive saorview so all you need is a good FTA receiver.

Here is a rough list of what you need to purchase
    http://satworld.ie/product-info.php?Technomate_3000D_Satellite_Receiver-pid276.html
    http://satworld.ie/product-info.php?80cm_Satellite_Dish-pid224.html

    http://satworld.ie/product-info.php?Opticum_4_way_DiseqC_Switch__4x1_-pid189.html

(I dont work for Satworld just found everything you need here)

The 4 way disecq would be an advantage if you want to add another dish in the future.

I find Flysat a lot better than lyng or king of sat.

List of French channels on Atlantic bird 3 @ 5west

    TéléGrenoble Isère
    Mirabelle TV
    TLP
    Demain!
    Normandie TV
    Vosges Télévision
    KTO TV Catholique
    TV8 Mont Blanc
    NRJ Paris
    BFM Business
    TV 5 Monde FBS
    France 2
    France 5
    France Ô
    LCP

That's very helpful of you Scaller. Thanks.

I actually dont have a dish, my mother has an unused one since she removed sky 2 years ago. Really I have nothing tv wise. I have saorview coming into the living room from an aerial on the roof (renting, was here when I moved in) and I have never had sat tv before so really I know nothing either.
I just dont want to buy and get stuff installed and then realise that I actually have wrong stuff or need to get more to suit mine and the wife's needs.

The link to equipment comes up with nothing in the basket, could you take a screengrab or snip?

Edit: Thanks for editing your post scaller. That looks good. Equip shoild come in less than 200 roughly which is fine.
Does it all mean I would have 2 dishes on the walls or one?
The list of french stuff on the links seems fine, its a case of having to do with whatever the installation company is able to receive for us.

    Thanks again

    Hi Irish,

Would be thankful if you let us know how you get on.

I was wondering if you could get 28E and 5W with two lnb's on the same dish, or would you need a motorised dish, or would two dish's be an easier job.

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭irishproduce

    I will of course Friendo.
I would hope that some one in the future might benefit from my experience too.

I don't know anything about satellites but wil answer any questions raised once I go through it all with satellite.ie

The answer is "NO WAY" on one dish.
    They are too far apart!!!!:(:(

Is it just me or do all of the required products seem better priced on that satworld website?

    For example:
    http://satworld.ie/product-info.php?Technomate_3000D_Satellite_Receiver-pid276_html= is €74.99 here

    http://satellite.ie/acatalog/Freesat_and_Free_to_Air_receivers.html start at between €100 - €150

    Or

    http://satworld.ie/product-info.php?80cm_Satellite_Dish-pid224_html= is €49.99 here

    http://satellite.ie/acatalog/80cm_Dish_by_Andrews_.html is €55.67 here

    Finally:

    http://satworld.ie/product-info.php?Opticum_0_1db_Universal_Signal_LNB-pid176_html= is €9.99 here

    http://satellite.ie/acatalog/Titanium_.2DB_LNB.html is €16.99 here.

    There are others too.

Adding them all up is going to cost about €60 - €100 extra in equipment alone.

Am I missing something or is one company just that much cheaper than the other.

Finally, I asked earlier but haven't confirmed yet.
Will there be 2 dishes on my wall or one?

    Thanks for any input

It'll depend on what satellites you decide to go with, and your final set up. If going for 28E and 19E, one dish will do the job. If going for 28E and 5W then you'll need either one motorised dish, or two fixed dishes (or one huge fixed dish! Not a realistic option really)

To get a spread from 5 west to 28 east with 1 dish will require either a motorised setup or a purpose-built multisat dish such as the Wavefrontier T90.

Only problem with motorised is that each connected receiver is limited to whatever satellite the dish is pointed at, but it's certainly a good option (with decent size dish) if you want to really find out what's available out there. :)

Probably just go with 2 dishes to be honest.
My mother already has a sky one spare so if I understand correctly, this can be used for the English FTA and I buy a second one for French TV.

If I were to use one 80cm dish and go with 19E, is this inferior to having 2 dishes and getting 5W?

Also think I will go with Satworld instead as they seem cheaper. Will look at all the prices properly tonight

Irish. The box in Satworld is a generic FTA box suitable for Disecq switching Its the type of box that is the most common.
Lots of installers gave up using FTA boxes when Freesat boxes came out.
The only time i would use a FTA box would be for a European customer..

The Boxes Satellite.ie sell are Combo and Freesat Branded.

There is a Better choice of French channels on 5west

You'd be best going into satworld and discussing your requirements, they have loads of products that are not on the site too from what I can see. Lots of other technomate models etc.. instore. i always find them extremely helpful.

Bear in mind that that TNTSAT (the French PSB channels on Sat) is available on 19.2. So you would just need a simple bracket and lnb to add to an existing Astra 2 dish.

You need to order the card first and make sure you have a box that understand it.

This is the thread you should read.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭irishproduce

    Thanks STB,

Is there a specific box I would need for this?
I read your thread link but I don't know what OsCam is.

If I were to get one of these cards delivered to the wife's house in France (To avoid any confusion in it getting here), is there something else that is needed or do all receiver boxes have a card slot for certain signals?

Sorry for the questions but I don't know about this stuff.

Alternatively, is it just as handy to erect a second sat pointing to atlantic bird and get those channels? Would I be missing a lot channels?

    Freesat .ie

    http://www.freesat.ie/index.php?cat=French_Receivers
    http://www.freesat.ie/index.php?cat=Freesat_Packages

I would recommend the French TNTSAT receiver ( Almost sure its Astra 19E), as like a Freesat receiver it will give you an easy to use and full TV Guide.
One dish for 28E and 19E.

I would recommend giving Michael from Freesat.ie a ring, I'm sure he can give a good price on supply and install if required.

Ha ha, very good PTB. Just because she speaks it, doesn't mean she will have a clue what is going on on that website. I am not too bad at French myself. Tell me, are they all discussions on the FTA units/ models? ya?

Tell me this, if my wife was to get a french box sent here by her family, in theory, could that just be hooked up here to a satellite I could get in? Would it be capable of bringing in the English FTA too?
What happens if we want to watch TV upstairs with junior? Is that another box connected to the Sat?
God so many questions, so many possibilities :-)

    Legend!
I'll talk to the wife about where she would source one of them - combien??

Regarding the card to decode the channels, is there a special shop she has to send her family into to get one of the cards?

    Thanks
Ps, spoke to Steve, he is kindly coming to my house for a cup of tea tonight to go through my options :D

Thank you all for all of your help, I am really grateful!

    Just to update here.
Steveon came and installed my two satellites, used my mothers old sky box so we have the FTA British stuff coming through brilliantly!
He also put the second sat pointing at that French satellite perfectly with the wire dropped in waiting for the french box to arrive from France.

All very tidy and very well priced for everything.
If anyone in the mid west region reads this after a search someday, I can highly recommend contacting Steveon and he seems to be able to bring in all sorts of channels depending what you require.

I have put up a post on another thread re my next predicament now.
French stuff is visible to me on the new box that arrived from France but all the channels are saying no card inserted even though it is.

Here is the thread - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=77093579#post77093579

If anyone here is familiar with what I do next, please let me know.
Might ring Steve tomorrow anyway but a bit late now.

Thanks again everyone for your help. Hope someone benefits from this thread on the future too.

Take the card out of the box.

Turn off the box. Turn on the box. Insert the card.

Should pick it up automatically. If not leave it in and let it pick up the updates to the box which may take some time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭irishproduce

Ya, I was in the EPG guide menu, came out and can see TF1 now. Gonna leave it overnight and see does it straighten itself out.

I will have to contact the manufacturer too because I can see it on the RGB scart but when I go hdmi, I get nothing at all.
    Something not right there.
