Does anyone do weight lifting without protein shakes, carbs supplements etc.

If so what advice would you give on food etc.

It seems like everyone is on shakes and so on, what did they do years ago?

I do when i have enough free time, some times with exams and deadlines and the likes I take a whey supplement as it's just easier.

Cook your food in bulk. I cook about 10 chicken breasts and just put them in the fridge and eat them over the next few days. Same with minced beef (generally i only keep mince for 2 days though). Other than that pasta, couscous (cooks in 2 minutes just pour hot water on it) and olive oil. Calorie dense = easier life :P

In the 1970's they did all manner of stuff.

Shakes were around then and from what we've read they were terrible.

It's just easier now to get the calories into you.

300g protein a day is a lot. It's a lot of eating etc so getting half it from shakes helps.

Anybody with any sense is aware that shake are simply food at a basic level. Anybody who rates them as more, isn't worth listening too really.

Its just food as said. Protein powder is a cheap convenient food, its almost like asking what did they do years ago before microwave curries!
    sup·ple·ment (spl-mnt)
    n.
    1. Something added to complete a thing, make up for a deficiency, or extend or strengthen the whole.
They probably would have supplemented their previous 'non-training diet' with more protein rich foods which are convenient and easy to ingest in large amounts -just like now. I wonder if any of them called this additional food they ate supplements... esp. if it was food they would never have ordinarily eaten.

I would eat whey whether I trained or not, I like it and just think of it much like any other processed foods I eat.

It's incredibly simple, just eat enough to fulfil your macros without using supplements. Supplements aren't some super product which create muscle, they're just a convenient way of taking in protein / calories / carbs / creatine etc depending on your desire.

Do a proper nutrition plan and you wont need supplements unless
    1) You require a very high intake of calories / protein / carbs
    2) You're on a strict diet where supplements are a benefit (cutting normally)
    3) You don't have the self-restraint to adhere to a proper nutrition plan.

of course sometimes the shake is more palatable the food, i normally try eat real food in the car after the gym, turkey in tinfoil or cold eggs etc, but if its legs day and heavy and i either puke, or get close to puking, i cant really stomach the food so soon after, myofusion vanilla almost has a soothing effect....there there...it's gonna be ok:)

but i like food too much for shakes...i'd rather eat the grub than drink it!

Try to get as much as possible from food, but sometimes you just gotta supplement.

Protein Shakes, fibre from husks etc.

At the end of the day, they're just parts of food.

If you were adamant about avoiding all supplements, the best way to do so is to realise the macros of what you need to be eating, and find foods to match.

high protein - low fat - no carb = white meats, chicken, turkey
high protein - high fat - no carb = red meats, lamb, beef, pork & Cheese, eggs etc
med protein - high fat - low carb = nuts, oils
no protein - low fat - high carbs = pasta, potatoes, breads

Find the macros of the foods that you need to eat, and eat them. Simple really.
www.myfitday.com or any other decent calorie counter should be able to give you the details of what's in what you're eating.

    Lol
    >-So you think it's possible to get stronger on a raw food diet?

(Laughing) Why don't we ask a gorilla that question! A gorilla has the strength equivalent to benchpressing 4,000 pounds -- that's 40 times stronger than the average man. What does the gorilla eat? 100% raw plant foods. It's just common sense -- all the largest and strongest mammals on Earth are 100% raw plant eaters -- the gorilla, the elephant, the hippopotamus, the giraffe, the rhinoceros, the horse, the bull, the buffalo, and so on, are all 100% raw plant eaters!
What about the sperm whale though? Those guys are obligate carnivores and they're buff as ****.

Those articles do more damage by resorting to such ridiculous suggestions

The logic is amazing, maybe I should be walking around with my hands on the ground too.

I'm going to get a baseball bat, take a permanent marker to it and write in big words "CORRELATION =/= CAUSATION" and any time I see someone writing stupid sh*t like that I'm beating them half to death, as a warning to others to stop being so f*cking thick.

I don't take any supplements anymore and I admit that it is more expensive, time consuming and effort.
I've nothing particularly against supplements but it is just a choice I made.
It's made me a better chef too :)
    But the fecking cleaning afterwards...

Seriously Raw Foods is something to consider if interest in health, fitness, strength and stamina. Lance Armstrong switched to this type of diet with remarkable results. Don't take my word for it just do your own research.

You don't realise how negligible the effects from most supplements are, especially if you say people are ''on shakes''. You make it sound like a drug, when it is really just a convenient form of food.
