Got my car serviced & my crankshaft seal needs to be replaced soon - how much will it cost [excl labour] & will I need to replace the timing belt also? The dude in the garage didn't know the cost & I forgot to ask about timing belt.

Presumably its the older shape astra(astra G)?
Depending on how bad the leak is then it would be wise to change the belt as if any oil has got onto the belt it will weaken it. The belts on certain astra models have to be changed every 40k(miles) or 4 years anyway.

Long time no talk stripysocks :D. I have the same version as yours, timing belt will be around 350 as water pump must be done too.

    Bluebell :pac:

The Z14xep/xel engines in the astra H's are chain, the Z14xe in the G is belt.:)

Ahhhhhhhhh, i should have known that now. It must have only been the 1.8 they kept from the g so before the vvt? Or was a more powerful 1.6 variant introduced too?

The 1.6 and 1.8 engines in the H were still belt.

To confuse things further, the Astra G 'classic' sold in other markets until 09 or 10, I think, had the Euro Astra H's chain driven 1.4 engines.:P

    *scratches head*

I'll just tell the dude in the garage I need a new crankshaft seal [thankfully I know now it's not called a crankshift or he'd have a great laugh at me!] and will assume he will know whether anything else needs to be changed or not :)

Is the guy your going to ask to do the crankshaft seal not the same guy who serviced it?

You'd also need to know which seal it is that needs to be changed, timing side or gearbox side. Big labour difference between the two.
