I know the Christmas Indian special was utter rubbish of the highest but just said I would give folks a heads up anyway about the new series. Apparently they are going to Italy to drive the Lamborghini Aventador, the McLaren MP4-12C and the Noble M600. Might give it a peak just for that.

    BBC2 Sunday, 29th January @ 8:00pm.

Its going further off course each season so you still watch it but enjoy it less. Theres four channels showing Top Gear repeats at this stage. Fifth gear is a proper car show but i dont have channel 5 :( But i do have youtube and its on there :p

Fifth gear is sky, saw recent ones too. Dunno what channel though.

Some are on dave, but think one of the discovery channels show it?

Top Gear is a bit of a joke at this stage IMHO, all the presenters ego's have gone through the roof and they'll say anything at all if they think its funny. Even the episodes from about 6 or 7 years ago were way more car focused. Now its just an entertainment show with a motoring theme

But i'll almost certainly be watching ths new series..lol

i often find that people complain about it being ****e yet most of the time they'll still watch it.. is that just me?

We're not exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to alternatives.

Recently I've been scrambling around youtube, gear patrol, evo, autocar, jay lenos garage to get my car fix, like a Junkie..

And I was also a bit miffed with Fifth Gear recently, they left vicky test the new M5 instead of Tiff.. His E60 M5 review was one of my favourites

Top gear is an entertainment show with cars, Fifth gear is a car show with entertainment. Nevertheless I'll still be watching this tomorrow night!

Check out www.thenextgear.com Great reviews of cars that people will actually buy. Bob is a user on here too!

I enjoy most of the Top Gear challenges, I heard they're going to China this series so might be interesting - maybe a review of the MG6?.

At least it isn't half as poorly acted as bad as Top Gear USA

So I have a choice between Top Gear, Dancing on Ice or Fair City. Decisions, Decisions.

I hope it is successful. At the moment, they all use their own equipment and give a lot of their own time to it and don't get paid 1 cent.

We have Bob here and Callum their photographer so it would make sense for us all to support it.

Therein lies the problem. The show is completely scripted and it's cringey to watch. Even the canned laughter at the predicatable jokes, I hate it.
I'll be honest , if I want to look at flashy cars I look at the HWIST thread. If I need comedy Top Gear is the last place I want to find it.
    This show has become irrelevant

The show has gone really downhill lately, but i still cant stop watching it.

Car reviews on the show I think are ok but there should be more of them & less of all the other nonsene.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,443 ✭✭✭fergiesfolly

The fact that my wife, who has no interest in cars watches this show religiously, while I, who quite like cars doesn't really bother any more, illustrates where this program has gone in recent years.
The three lads have become the smug, arrogant, pompous ass types that comes with being a long term bbc presenter.
My main gripe with the program is there refusal to do revues on ordinary family cars.
Clarksons revue on the new focus was a still shot of the car and "If you want a car that looks like a car, buy a focus".....wonderful.Pity we can't all have our own program to show off our GT40's Jezza.

Agree with you there, TG was very good about 6 or 7 years ago, when it wasn;t as big as it is now. In recent years they have been harpering on about their budget being cut, thats an issue when you're doing pathetic stunts like a dropping a car from a mile in the air, (which was one of the most pointless things i've seen them do, a couple of year ago i think..) but when you're doing car reviews with a slight twist(Which is what TG used to do) shouldnt be a problem..

Hammond is the real root of that cringe'ness you speak of, Clarkson has only got mildly worse in recent years.

I wonder will there be any Public Servants in the audience? :D

Yeah I really like www.thenextgear.com. I keep an eye on the site for new videos and watch them all. Bob comes across well on camera, and whoever produces is really good. If that TV3 car show gets another season surely he's a shoe-in for a part?

He seems to like the Renault Flatulence tho - if we ever meet there'll have to be an exchange of cross words:p

Old Top Gear was better than New TG or Fifth Gear IMO. In those days though, with no YouTube, we were easier to please.

XFR and ST crashing in opening credits. Felt a little sad:(

An enjoyable episode. Clarkson always impresses me by how much he is willing to risk speed-wise. Also, I never view Imola as foreboding until that challenge!

A stupid point they made was that the cars pass the pits at 200mph, while the F1 cars only passed at 180mph. That's stupid cos Imolas last chicane has been removed since F1's last visit in 2006!

Amazing show. Goes from strength to strength. I have every episode on my media player. Even now, depiste seeing every episode numerous times, whenever its being rerun on tv, and its just happened to come on in the background, I find myself watching it and laughing again at everything.

The cinematography is fantastic, and in these bloody boring times of PC crap and environmental focus, this show is a great relief. I couldnt give a fcuk about the environment, Id love to race any of those cars regardless of the damage they do.

For those that say the show is pointless now, here is some advice for you, change the channel or turn the tv off. I dont want to see normal everyday cars reviewed on the show, I can go and test drive everyday cars myself at any dealership, I dont need TG to tell me about how many cupholders it has and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Good episode, laughed when Clarkson drove onto the tram tracks in the Lambo, only bad part was the Noble, why do they always do this stupid underdog test, "Let's get the biggest supercars from the biggest manufacturers in the world and put them against a small, British manufacturer". Could have been plenty of decent cars in its place but they went ahead with it and, as expected, it failed miserably when trying to punch above its weight. Wasn't surprised when Hammond said he'd take the Noble over a Ferrari 458, typical ****e they come out with.

TBH, I read the OP in this thread and was wondering why the Ferrari wasn't part of the test but then they made it clear that the Ferrari is the benchmark in this case.

Overall, good episode, hopefully it stays on form

The whole episode was dedicated to that one item. Didnt like it at all.

My main gripe with the program is there refusal to do revues on ordinary family cars.

That would be boring though I honestly couldn't give a flying f u c k about the new Honda Civic or BMW 320d I'd much rather watch some supercars and stuff blow up. I can kinda she where you coming from though but theres no need for that type of consumer infomation show anymore as all the Infomations on the net and you'd go test driving the cars anyway.

Id rather they had a NSX-R.. would destroy that thing.

    no breakdowns either.

Noble have made some great cars in the past and the M600 is no different. It's great to see something different on the show.

Also it's hardly TG's fault if some of the great unwashed haven't heard of them

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 994 ✭✭✭carbon nanotube

    I heard of them alright...

not that i would buy one even if I could afford one.

Was better than i was expecting tbh, found a bit more entertaining and less cringeworthy than expected, star in the reasonably priced car was crap as always though, god, will dot i dot am was about the poorest guest they've ever had on it. That segment might be entertaining if they had John Prescott on it every week or something, he was genuinely entertaining on it!

Top Gear has become so scripted and predictable that it can be boring and/or cringeworthy.
I'll watch many of the re-runs on Dave but to be honest, I'm not bothered if I see a new one or not.

Clarkson isn't looking the best is he, those fags are doing some damage I'd say. :D Hammond is such a total gimp in every way, he's just so predictable and James May is just .

    :pac:

Come off it. An NSX-R is a damn nice car, but the Noble is in a different league!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭RandomAccess

I've been critical of TG of late, but I thought it was a pretty good episode, at least they avoided giving James a ridiculous car like that DB9 he had with the full cage and no air-con.

Wouldn't mind hearing the tale of that guy who overnighted the replacement Noble to Rome.. Must have been a fairly hot shoe!

Improvements... they should have swapped during the trip and given their impressions of each others cars. In the past when they've done that they've come to a consensus at the end, which is way better than how they usually end it these days with everyone disagreeing.

They were licking some serious arse with Noble showing "component" failure and suddenly a second car. My monies on a second car always being there.

Even still imagine being the lucky sod in Noble who's asked to drive their 650bhp Supercar all the way to Rome for a Top Gear shoot. Petrol costs being paid for.:D

Enjoyed the episode tonight, had a few giggles although it felt like they could have got more into the hour, there was nothing else in it besides the challenges
