Not to be pedantic, but 'shanwick' radio is not ATC, they are radio officers. The ATC part (non-radar) is done in prestwick with no radio comms there. Is it not on live ATC?

Hi all, the comms end is still carried out Ballygirreen (not sure of spelling) not far from Shannon. Can be also heard on the usual HF frequencies for listeners with suitable receivers. Personally i find it hard to beat listening direct on a receiver with all the interference and trying to improve reception with the ATU. I think that the computer takes some of the fun out the hobby, i am old school but i think i will stick with it as long as there is voice on the frequencies.

What can I hear on Shanwick? Presumably the aircraft are at cruising altitude at this point so what are they communicating to the ground/to each other?

Hi plowman, normally youl pick up aircraft checking into shanwick just after leaving radar coverage at 15 west(i think) theyl report position, height and mach no,shanwick then verify their atlantic crossing co ordinates and give them a selcal check and tell them to call again at another longitute/latitude position.thats just basic shanwick, the real fun is picking up long distance comms after dark,i used to like listening to dakar and tripoli.
you can also listen to stockholm radio which basically offers as a phone patch link to some company headquarters to update any changes or requests crew have, not all companies use this!!

Hi A320, good to see that there are still some SWL listeners around. Further to your your last post unfourtunately the computer( CPDLC ) has taken some of the fun out of Transatlantic crossing with less voice. But however we must make the best while we still have voice.
Regarding advice on HF receivers there are still some good used receivers to be had. The Realistic DX 394 is a good budget receiver, the Target is also in that range. Lowe, Icom, JRC, are other names but more expensive. New the Eton brand have a no of receivers at reasonable prices.
Hopefully there maybe something of interest to you.

Reminds me of trying to get a step climb clearance from Gander, west of Greenland on HF one night many years ago. Kept getting cut over by position reports to Mumbai!

    Try here http://www.iaa.ie/index.jsp?p=154&n=253

5.505mhz is usualy tx'ing all day giving weather reports for European Airports. Loads of frequencies used due to txing variations at different times of the year.

Is it VHF frequencies or HF ? as there are lots of HF avaliable. There are plenty of Frequency guides on sale. If you try Googling Seldec they carry a full range of guides.

Hi. LiveATC from Shanwick is down. Is there any other PC based method of getting onto that frequency? TIA!

Gotta admit that i love the idea of CPDLC, using HF is a PITA :)

This feed has being offline for over 3 months and no updates if it will return anytime soon and also the flightradar24 receiver is down as well, maybe we should have donated more to keep it online;)
