So, dropped into my local garage this a.m. with my 968 for some tlc, . and was chin-wagging with the mechanic, swapping war-stories......and he produced this beauty.

So, the question is, folks........what is it ?
Better still - WHY is it the way it is....?

OK, the Pro's on here may spot it quick so don't kill the thread too quickly ! :)

No idea what it is, but it looks like the eye/loop was welded on afterwards. Maybe the part was jammed in place and the loop was used to pull it out?

    Is it an injector?

I'm going to guess at an oil temp or pressure sensor that was seized in place and had to have the eye welded on to reef it out?

It looks like a trackrod welded to a towing eye ?
    I'd say a camshaft puller ?

My guess is it's a diesel injector slide hammer removal eye, with injector in place to make the game easy.

Probably this, or a half shaft welded to a towing eye. Why I have no idea though.

Inner tie rod end with a bit of the rack still attached, and an eye welded to that.

OK, it's been fun, but day is over, time to head off, so I'll put you out of your misery........it IS an injector.

Not a tool, puller, adaptor, but, until (v.) recently, a real live working injector (well, kind of.......)

    2007/2008 Opel Astra 1.3CDTI..........

It needed to be replaced - actually, 2 of them did - but they would not budge, no matter what tool, or tools, or force, used.

So, weld on eye. Attach eye by lifting chain to........engine crane. Lift CAR by aforesaid......injector......eventually, with weight of car attached, plus tools, it came out.

And then repeat for the 2nd injector.............

..and all because..........of a seal

Apparently the seal near the tip gave up, and pressure blow back from the cylinder gets up past it, and, basically, 'welds' the body of the injector to the bore through the head that it sits in......

I was going to say it was so Irish drivers with petrol cars could save face in the company/pub carpark. You just tie a large heavy bit of metal so that it will clank off something when you start up and on idle. TDI badge off eBay, lumber around in too heavy a gear to get a good vibration going - instant Irish street cred.

Close-up of the crud - oil/diesel/combustion fumes you can see encrusted on body of injector......

    190115.jpg

Can't see any of these modern things getting to big mileages - can you ?

Add in DPF, DMF, and whatever else you fancy, and.....for small cars, petrol is still the way to go.

Im going to call bull**** on that one, They would have the right tools for the job and not have to go to the trouble of welding a eye onto the head of the injector.

Have to agree. The background pic looks like a right pig of a garage and certainly not a main dealer..

What is the "right tool" to attach to an injector to transmit that kind of force?

Who ever did this sounds like he knew exactly what he was doing and knew the quickest and best way to do it.

Injectors and glowplugs can be nightmareish to remove.

I have it on good authority that that IS the way to remove a stuck injector. I am also aware that this thread has turned into another "don't buy diesel" thread. It's fking exhausting tbh!

Remember to apply copper grease to the injector north of the seal when refitting. Makes the job easier when doing them again, at 300,000 miles.

I've done this on a ship's injector with the 10ton overhead crane - you know the expression "getting promoted through dead man's shoes"? well I nearly did, missed the 3rd engineer by inches as it rocketed out of the injector pocket. Since then I make sure to use lots of copp-a-slip when its going in and tie it down so it only has an inch of travel on the way out. I still remember the 3rds face afterwards - he looked like he'd found religion

Irrelevant. By your logic then, all 'main dealer's' with wonderful premises would ...what.....even own a welder ? ......you'd be invoiced for a new head, thats what they'd do. They wouldn't waste their time in stuff like this...

Yes, but these things aren't going to get anywhere near those mileage's......and def nit on original injectors...... These things are going AWOL at less than 100k. And thats kms......I'll look up the odo on that car on Tuesday.....

Ouch. A friend of mine has one that went about 80k km without a service. Has been trouble free so far but I'd imagine stories like this arent too far away tbh. High mileage modern diesels are going to be rare IMO. If the trouble I've had on one used in "ideal" conditions is anything to go by I hold out little hope. The days of 250k+ are long gone.

The deposits that build up from leaking injector seals is carbon.

I use a much simpler method to remove them....A heavy duty oven cleaner will dissolve most carbon deposits in about an hour and doesn't destroy the expensive injectors. ;)
