Drivers as Guides?

Was on a DB hop on/off Dublin tour few years ago, and the driver did a great job giving the speil. Safety wise are the any concerns though with the splitting of the drivers attention between driving and "entertaining" the passengers? Is it common practice elsewhere or is a separate guide just too expensive?
