    Hi there,

    I had some interest in my photos recently of someone in website services and he figured that down the line, we may be able to do business together. This would be taking photo's for website's that he develops.

    I am not a pro photographer and have not yet gone into business with photography at all but always aiming to be involved with it somehow.

    I am just unsure as to how much my services should be towards travelling to a place and taking maybe 20 photos + editing. Can someone give me a rough guideline on it?

    Cheers

    Charge as much as you can.

    Factor in your time (shooting, travelling, editing), your insurance costs for the year, your tax, VAT (if you make enough), costs for an accountant, costs for wear and tear of your gear over time, and then a healthy profit margin.

    All standard good business practice.

    There is no set answer, and no easy answer. What you charge is up to you, but you should make sure that you have full and proper insurance, because if anything goes wrong, they may come after you.

    Chances are you are about to be taken advantage of - its possible that you may be of service to the website service provider but I doubt he/she will be offering any sort of payment which will make you a profit - you may be lucky to break even.

    most people offering a web service simply cannot or will not factor in the full rates of a professional photographer, they cant justify the costs involved in hiring a professional or purchasing a stock image.

    if this is a hobby/profession you wish to persue you may well gain some experience but if you want to have some kind of bargaining tool ensure a contract is drawn up between you and this web service provider - a simple agreement that you agree to licence images to the web service provider for online web publication ONLY, this agreement will be on payment of X amount per Y amount of images and will include all travel costs and associated costs in creating/obtaining images, The photographer retains copyright of any/all images supplied at all times and reserves the right to revoke licence in the event of non-payment and/or disagreement.

    using this kind of agreement if you fall-out with the web service provider you have the right to take all the images you have taken with you and he/she has no right to use them for past/present/future work created by them - in simple terms you have an element of power while working "for" him/her.

    Thats the thing, I maybe going to be taken advantage of, im not sure, but at the same time, I always fancied getting into photography as an extra earner on top of being a hobby. This is where I get confused because how much is a photo worth?

    The contract is obviously a good idea to go down, and would like to draft up something for that. but I just dont know how decent I am at photography, esp of this sort. I take sports photo's for fun and are appreciated, I take some photos for my employer to promote a new bistro he has on facebook and this designer comes along and says that they would work for his idea for the website and then wants to maybe pursue with me taking shots for his next website. so this is where I wonder what the charge should be from now on!

    :confused::confused:
