...when after ordering an inspiron 9100 with an mr9800 onboard, I see rock direct are now shipping a beast of a machine with an x800 pci-e- compatible mobility inside for the same price!

Try ringing them to say that your significant other has gotten it for you, and you don't want it anymore.

    yup,
either that or I'll tell em I don't fancy paying nearly 3,000 for a machine that's just been cancelled production wise and that is now approx 40% less effective gaming wise than what I CAN actually get now for the same money:D

I thought you can return goods, if you don't open them, if you simply don't want them. You will get charged a restocking fee but that shouldn't be excessive. Can you post a link to the new machine? Seen nay benchmarks for that gfx chipset over a 9800? Also what do you mean by x800 pci-e- compatible?

PCI-E is the new graphics bus, a replacement for AGP, and the x800 is the flagship line of graphics cards from ATI.

    Hope its usefull.

I was referring to the compatible bit? Is it socketed module, ie upgradable? Also the mobility ones are usually a variation of the desktop ones and not as fast. Usually.

Had a quick look but all I can see is a press release. Where does it say its upgradeable? TBH I never heard of a laptop manufacturer produce an upgrade for a any laptops that had "upgradeable" graphics in the past. Is there a new standard or is this a proprietory slot or socket?

Not quite sure bout this laptop in particular, but I do know for sure that some dells on the market nowadays can be upgraded with new graphics chips. Im sure thatd youd have to buy this special upgrade off dell tho.... And theres a kick in the wallet!

    Upgrading a Dell 9100: here
It can be done, but its' a lot easier in the US, Dell Ireland are very slow to sell parts, in case you make a mess of it, they don't want to have to fix it- also voids the warranty.

Rock mainly use clevo laptop's, who use their own 'Clevo proprietary connection' for the graphics card(Not Nvidia's MXM or AtI's Axiom),which can be upgraded.
Get shot of the Dell if you can, and go for the rock, or wait until Feb. as Dell are releasing the 2nd .gen. XPS/9100.
After considering buying the 9100, Alienware A-51 7700(del. late Jan), and the Sager 9860(also Jan. and shipped from states),
I'm ordering the Xtreme Ti 3.6 in the morning. It's costing €2700 ish(excl. VAT), and Should have it 3rd week Dec. :D:D

as far as I'm aware the 9100 is upgradeable only to the mr9800 256 mb...and that's it.
