Just bought a 2003 a4 automatic(tiptronic one)it was driving grand at first the millage wasnt too bad less than 100,000, but im after noticing theres a little lag from when going from a complete stop to taking off and occasionally theres a bit of a jolt. (i know im really worried its new gearbox time). Once the car is up to speed it drives like a dream. Ive researched a little bit on it and it seems to be a problem with the B6 gearboxs i was wondering has anyone ever come across this before do you know if audi have done any recalls or is it hand in wallet time. im bringing it to an audi garage on fri but just seeing if anyone has an idea of price or knows of any gearbox specialists that might be able to remedy it with new parts.

Needs to be diagnosed, might need a fluid change, might be t0ssed, a new auto box won't be cheap.

i know i got a price of 200 euro just to service the auto transmission, but i can understand as i heard the ATF fluid is about 20-30 euro a litre. i am praying its not a new gearbox if it is i got rightly done when i bought it

They are a fairly ****é box in fairness if its a ZF box. I replaced one before on a higher end Audi and you dont want to know the price.. Have you any bother with reverse??

Reverse gear is grand not a bother on it im just hoping a atf fluid change might work a miracle

I doubt it but maybe it will. 200 quid for a fluid change is madness op, the stuff is not that dear. Where abouts are you based???

im based in north dublin i had it booked in for a service with a main audi garage i dont know if im allowed say which one on this, and they guy on the phone said for an engine diagnostics 85euro (The check engine light came on briefly but its gone now) 280 i think for full service then an extra 200 for an auto box service

€200 isn't bad at all for a ZF box service. The flluid used is crazy expensive and if it includes a filter, pan gasket and labour its a steal.

Send a PM to a guy called Nissan Doctor. He is based in Drumcondra and he will have a better knowledge of this stuff and will charge you a lot less than that. Those prices are insane...

i think it might of been abit more maybe 240 euro but he didnt mention filters etc

Its almost definitely not included to be honest. I paid €250 for 10 litres of Esso fluid alone.

My point was that they are probably buying that in bulk as opposed to small cartons. Allthough as you said there seems to be a good bit of labour in it so maybe it wasnt that bad. I know when I had problems with my box none of the above were replaced except the fluid..

I bought it out of a 20 litre drum and they gave me 2 litres free. :D Its not too labour intensive at all if all they're doing is replacing the fluid, and chances are you only need about 5-6 litres for an A4 box.

The B6 version was troublesome but the issues you describe are not consistent with the major problems. These boxes are laggy anyway, I wouldn't worry about that. The jolting sounds a little suss though. I have a B7 version btw.

...they'll charge the customer rrp for it, rightly so too imo :)

its only when taking off from a stopped position that i feel the lag, the jolt is sort of like when u dont clutch properly in a manual. its sort of like the gearbox grabs the gear and it jolts forward very slightly but again only happning from a stopped position

I was thinking about 5 litres allright. Its not an easy diy job in fairness unless you have a lift.

The oil for the multitronic box is a specific one that is not available in bulk to the best of my knowledge. It is only available from either VW/Audi or Febi and only comes in 1 litre bottles. Same situation with the DSG gearbox oil also.

OP I wouldn't go to the dealer if I were you. There is no advantage in it for you. Go to a good independent and get the codes read and get the box serviced and see where that leaves you.

Does this happens always or intermittently? Is it after reversing?

The controller failing is the major issue with these boxes and you will know because it will go into limp mode AFAIK.

no it is usually after stopping and starting alot like being caught in traffic for five mins it never happens after revrse, on the drie home today it happened alot

The gear oil in those boxes is supposed to be changed at regular intervals and, in most cases, it has never be changed.

I have a regular customer with an RS6 and it had slightly jerky gear changes, especially when cold. An oil and filter change later and he reports a vast improvement.

I have to agree here - I remember reading my gearbox was 'sealed' for the life of the car which is total BS as the main dealer told me it needed to be done and subsequently carried out the work.
My ZF 6sp auto is as smooth as it should be as a result.

Just got the bad news back the car had been throwing up the warnings before i bought it the gearbox was reset and speacialist looked at it gearbox is going to have to come out it could cost as much as 2500 im after getting badly burned on the sale previous owner new about it v pissd off but thats how it goes

Before you go crazy.... Have the fluid and filter changed. Check for deposits in the fluid or attatched to the pan magnet. If the fluid isnt burnt you may have be ok with the clutches or bands. You may have a sensor, solenoid, going bad. You may have to have the valve block removed to be stripped cleaned or repkaced. Be sure that you go to an Audi or indy who has the skill to diagnose. The dealer will probly put a reman box in and not bother opening up your one. (itll go back as a core) .Spent some time researching.ffs.

I would agree ,service the the transmission. I had noticed mine was a little lumpy over the last few months ,so I had the fluid changed and the filter. I did not notice much of a difference at first but over a couple of weeks the changes got smoother. I would not bother changing the box until the car wont move.

here is the most concise bit of feedback from above site:

    Feedback 11
Don’t touch with a very long barge pole!!! Check out the Audi forum ‘A4 B6′ or similar models, you will find over a hundred or more threads of failed mulitronic gearboxes. They start failing at as little as 24,000 miles. Audi are less than helpful in a lot of cases. Bills range from £1500 to £7000, depending on fault. The slight judder when pulling away is an early symptom of things to come. There doesn’t seem to be any cheap answer, those that have replaced one faulty part are then greeted with another expensive fault shortly after. My own, serviced by Audi since new, had the gearbox control unit replaced under warranty 20 months age. Gearbox Serviced by Audi 2 weeks ago, covered 140 miles, now total gearbox and gearbox control unit failure (2003 – 80,000 miles). Audi don’t want to know. Audi are aware of the faults but won’t recall and repair, as you would expect from a quality maker like Mercedes or BMW etc. It really is an issue that requires a group action to resolve

I know the conventional wisdom is that one has no comback in a private sale scenario. However, you said the previous owner was aware of the problem.

Does anyone know if this fact could affect the situation? Might be worth your while consulting a solicitor.

Selling a car dishonestly and misrepresenting the car?

Possibly something could be done if it was proved he reset it.

Not if the previous owner told the OP about it.
