SNK's new Neo Geo: 20 retro classics in one modern handheld

    http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/25/2731824/snk-neo-geo-portable-20-games
Now here's a hardware announcement we didn't expect to see this year: a new portable Neo Geo console. SNK seems to have licensed a handheld decked out in Neo Geo livery, with 20 classic arcade games from Metal Slug to King of Fighters '94 preloaded onto 2GB of internal memory. The system also has a 4.3-inch screen, an SD card slot of undisclosed purpose, four face buttons, four shoulder buttons, and (most importantly) appears to keep the digital stick from the Neo Geo home console's pad. Of course, it's not the first time you've been able to play these games on the go — a lot of them are available on SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 for PSP, and also as downloads from the PlayStation Store — but the device's retro appeal is undeniable. No word on pricing or availability as of yet, though. The reveal comes from Japanese game blog Famicom Plaza and is yet to be confirmed by SNK itself, so it's probable that, if real, the device has leaked ahead of its time.

Here's the list of games that come with the device:
    • World Heroes
    • Ultimate 11
    • Top Player's Golf
    • Sengoku
    • Nam-1975
    • Mutation Nation
    • Last Resort
    • King of Monsters
    • Frenzy
    • Cyber Lip
    • Fatal Fury Special
    • Art of Fighting
    • Super Sidekicks
    • League Bowling
    • Metal Slug
    • Magical Lord
    • Baseball Stars Professional
    • Samurai Shodown
    • King of Fighters '94
    • Fatal Fury

I'll wait to see what the build quality is like but it does look really nice and supports SD slot as well.

Of course its not a real Neo Geo Pocket which was a fantastic if short lived console :)

Remember kids, you're not a real gamer unless you own some SNK hardware.

And the Neo Geo Pocket doesn't count!

The Vectrex was marketed as a home version of an arcade machine.

Also, you didn't state the arcade machines need to be working. :pac:

    So I'm safe too thankfully.

May I also add, you're not a real gamer unless you own at least one first party unreleased prototype.

    Boo yeah.

*Cool, are we bragging about stuff we have. I like this game.
Anyway, you're not a real gamer unless you've gone to Japan or America simply to buy one game from someone on short notice. :D

edit: When I lived in Toronto I flew to New York with the wife and went to Nintendo World in Rockafeller to buy a DS Lite if that helps? And when I lived in Vancouver I peed outside EA Sports doorway if that helps? :)

    I have the Vectrex
    The G-Net
    The MVS board
The Ikea cab in my living room!

For the longest time, in order to qualify as a gamer you had to own a Nes.
Then Retr0 got one, finally, and so the goal posts had to be moved!

I reckon 3DO ownership should figure in there somewhere as a qualifier.
Love for Zelda on the CDi will see your membership here revoked and your remaining belongings sent on to you in a cardboard box...

Yus! Good thinking re the 3DO. Your not a real gamer unless you possess a minty FZ-1. All other variants do not count

Yep! Should have it sometime next week :)

I have no clue how big the mobo is. I'm hoping for standard PCB sized one, but have a horrible feeling I'm going to get a CPS2 sized package!

Better still, get a stripy black and white jumper, a black eye mask and a sack with the words "SWAG" on the side and join Retr0 robbing O1s1ns place!

That said, you will have to help him get his share past the all seeing eye of his mother!

    BACK ON TOPIC:

    Hells YES!
As long as the build & screen are decent, and it's around €100 I shall buy it ASAP.

I wonder if the cancelled MP3-player add-on will be in this.

Also from the button layout, I'm guessing that the analog buttons have been ditched (not really an issue).

Yeah, have to be nice to you now...
At least I know what my next hardware purchase is going to be, screw the Vita, at least this has a decent software library!
Also, if that SD card does what I assume it does it'll be the gift that'll keep giving too!
The entire Metal Slug series in your pocket?
    Sweet!

Some Numpty actually posted this on the news website mentioned in Kerbdogs post, not sure if they are being funny or just plain stupid...
So as I can understand, it will not accept the original cartridges ? Thanks but no thanks.

Let me know if you ever want to get rid of one. I sold my one off a while ago when I got the six slot. Big mistake!

I know, completely lucked out :)

Picked them up with MY Jamma Cab, but I kinda wasnt completely telling whole story :)
Only 2 of them seem to be working, 1 was working fine for half a day, now no sound,
but still lovely the Puzzle Bobble :)

I got some Isopropyl alcohol and a rubber today,
was told that cleaning Jamma Connectors may help with below,
If can magically fix a lot of them, no bothers one is yours :)

    My Otaku Extract

    MV-1B Works - Kinda
When I first tested the one of the MV-1B slots worked perfectly but later that day No SOUND,
I think I tried Adjusted Volume pots and still worked but later didnt? Could Pots be the issue?
If I turn it while game is running, gets bit if Hiss from Speakers if turn it, remove screwdriver and it goes away.
This MV-1B in H/W test Screen has No SOUNT TEST Menu
Only other thing I did was this all 10 boards and few other PCBs I had, no idea why stopped working.

    MV-1AX Works - Kinda
1 of these gets to Hardware TEST Screen,
Boots to test With Screen Lines Test, I can Test Sound and works fine, rear, Front, Center,
But it never boots to Game, and only way to exit is reboot, but also boots to H/W Test, All DIPS = OFF

    Other 8 MVS Slots:
None work, either get blurry scrolling image or 100's SQUARES that looks like doing something,
and SOUND in speakers POPS every few seconds.

Weird that they'd all be messed up, were they stored in a damp enviornment? Might want to stick them in a hot press for the night or something before powering them on again in case it's a moisture issue.

For the MV-1AX - have you tried different carts in this one? I remember sometimes my old 1 slot would do this, but only with a couple of particular games.

For all the other ones with weird graphical issues, it might indeed just be dirty contacts. MVS systems can be very finicky when it comes to gunk. I recently took my AES out of storage and it took me a while to get MVS carts going properly. Every time I'd boot the sprites would be totally glitchy. Was just a dirty connection in the end.

But yeah, would love to take one of them off you! Sure let me know how you get on :)
