Hello! My husband and I are looking at moving into the area in the next few years and we're both vegan, and wondering how accessible vegan foods/health food stores are there? We're specifically looking at Co. Cork, so that's the area we'd really need to know about. By vegan foods, I mean things like false meat, kombucha, yerba maté, natural household products, organic foods, etc. Thanks in advance! :D

I go to Ballincollig every few weeks and always go to the Quay Co-op and stock up on Fry's Sauages, Polony and Chicken-Style Nuggets (all Vegan I believe).

They have loads of stuff that just isn't available in Arklow :)

What's that polony like? I've often looked at it but never tried it. Does it add anything to a big veggie fry up??? :D

It's lovely :) Not a mad strong taste but it's kind of vaguely similar in taste and texture to white pudding if you've ever eaten that (without all the strange knobbly, gristley bits in). It's not spicy or anything.

I was a bit wary of it too but it's a great addition to a fry up :)

30+ years ago, and only because it didn't resemble meat! (Then I saw the light)

Sagesilver4 - It depends to where in Co. Cork you are moving.

Besides the Quay Co-op (which is well priced) there's the Organico (http://www.organico.ie) in Bantry. It's a friendly shop and they are helpful.

If you are moving anywhere near Cork city you will have no problems.

Rural Irish towns are not the best for catering to vegans, to say the least. You might find eating out a challenge.

Anyone know if you can get this polony in or near Dublin.. Or any online shop?
    Thanks

I got it last year in the fridge in Restore, on Camden St. If it's not currently in stock, they can get it in for you.
It's not the rarest of things though, I've seen it in a few other shops.
