Hi guys, I am due to move to Drumcondra next week and just have one or two questions if thats ok :)

The place I'm moving to is just around the corner from Drumcondra rail just trying to find out how expensive the rail is (their website wont tell me!) into Dublin city centre

Also what is the safest walkway from Drumcondra to O'Connell St?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Shanley,

Drumcondra is very near the city centre. If you are going to O' Connell Street it is only about a 15 min walk up Dorset St. There are many differennt buses such as 41,16,11 and many more which pass Drumcondra (www.dublinbus.ie).You never be waiting that long and they all serve the city centre. The bus fare is €1.90 to city centre.

The train fare is about €2.50(not too sure) and would not be as frequent as bus. It is not on the main Dart network so you are relying on commuter trains such as Maynooth and Longford Line which are not too frequent. The nearest stop Connolly station is only about a 5 min train journey. It all depends on where you are going in the city and centre.I cycle into work in the IFSC and this only takes me 12-15 mins (I have it down to fine are at this stage!)

Drumcondra is a relatively safe area so if you have common sense and street smart you will be fine

Any other questions feel free to ask!

I have never had any problems in Drumcondra if you keep common sense

The length of time you'd spend walking to the railway, waiting for a train and then walking form Conolly station back to O'Connoll Street, you'd have walked into O'Connoll Street from there anyway. Forget about getting a train into town.

Bus would even be better for getting to a train station in town, I reckon. Loads of busses stop outside Drumcondra Train Station.

Would it be an expensive taxi?

To/From O'Connell St should be less than a tenner.

Agree that getting the train is not the best option, seeing as the commuter trains do not run that frequently, and the overall distance is not that far. The bus is the best bet. Drumcondra station is on a very busy main road main road that goes to airport and lots of very heavily populated northside suburbs. Loads of buses will be passing that way. The best way to walk is head down Dorset Street, take a left onto Parnell Square and bobs yer uncle, you are on Upper O'Connell St. If you did get the train you'd have to walk up Talbot St to get to O'Connell St. It is not a long walk, but you are walking thru Junkie Central, so why bother?

The stretch of walk from the top of O'Connell St to the top of Dorset St can be a bit dodgy after dark, but keep your wits about you and you should be fine. Croke Park is just on your doorstep. That may be a hassle on match days or concert days if you don't like crowds. But I've always thought it adds a great buzz to the area.

    I'm here 3 months now so this is what I think;

    Transport
Links are very good, buses serving the route are 41/16/16a/13/33/3/11. Basically you can go almost anywhere in the city on those buses - 16a and 41 will bring you to the airport, 3 will bring you to UCD, 13 will bring you to Ballymun/IKEA, 11 brings you to Ranelagh, they all go to the city centre. From Drumcondra rail station its' €1.25 into O'Connell St and its about a 5-10 minute journey depending on traffic. You also have the commuter rail into Connolly if you need to switch to the DART/are from Sligo side and are heading home. Really well connected. It's about a 20 minute walk to the Spire from the rail station/Quinns.

    Amenities
Plenty around; obviously Croke Park is there for matches/gigs. You've got some good pubs; Quinns/Fagans etc and some nice cafes. Thunders is a great bakery and there's Tesco Express for the groceries. A few Spars/Centras around as well. Loads of Takeaways too.

As for walking into town, I've done tonnes of time at this stage; a good few times at the wee hours of the morning locked and I've had no hassle. The only place I had trouble was on O'Connell Bridge of all places where I got the head bet off me before Xmas for no reason. Its a busy area Lower Drumcondra - Dorset St -Frederick St at most hours of the day and night.

Edit; It's €8 from the rank outside the Gresham to Quinns and its €10 from Westmoreland St.

The bus is €1.40 from Quinns pub into town and it takes less than ten minutes. It will only take 15 minutes or so to walk it.
