car seizure question

Am I correct in saying that customs can seize a car they find running on agri diesel?
Do they always do this? If not always then in what circumstances would they seize it?
What happens to the car? Do you get it back? If you get it back are you charged storage or impound fees? How are these calculated?
What would be a "normal" first time offence fine in court?

    Thanks all.

...oh jesus ... ahem ... anyway.

I saw those show on RTE called customs.

They caught some guy and since it was his first offence they left him pay a fine.

Other than that i'm sure nobody here could answer your question since they do not have first hand experience and it would all be info from 'a mate' who knew 'a guy'

I have heard several different stories OP so I think it varies on who catches you...

First article is 8 years old and the second story featured people smuggling cigarettes also. As you said better of buying the proper stuff. It is becoming very tempting though..

On the customs tv show it was a hefty on the spot fine of a couple of hundred, if you couldn't get the cash there and then it was seized and you went to court. Think the first court appearance you are looking at €1500.

Their policy is to issue a penalty notice by post if the ID and real address of the driver can be ascertained at the side of the road. The case goes to court if the driver don't pay up or if he has previous offences.

They tend only to use seizure against travellers and out of state drivers if they don't stump up the cash on the spot.

    Okay, thanks for that everyone.

No Higgy, wasn't caught honestly. Like I said if there was one customs crew working the entire country I'd run into them on my first day driving illegally. Havent seen them in years aroound here though, here being Galway/Clare.

But like another poster said, it's getting mighty tempting the way road diesel prices are going :(
