We are currently waiting for a rent supplement claim to be sorted out but the house we are in is cold and damp and our children are constantly sick as 2 of them have asthma and there is now a more suitable house available in my area and I was wondering if we were to move to this house would this affect our claim for rent supplement. The CWO has told me that although we are not on the council housing list as yet we are entitled to claim rent allowance as we have been living in this house for almost 2 years

I'd say go and talk to the community welfare officer before you do anything although I'd imagine it's not a big deal, so long as you don't go above the maximum rent level for your area (see link below for county limits)

You'll probably have to fill in a new form and get the landlord to sign it if you do move but that's about it. I'd also advise you to see if you can get the rent supplement for your current address back-dated, assuming you had an entitlement to it over the past 2 years but were unaware of it.

Good advice but maximum backdating of a claim is six months & only under certain conditions.

If you want to move to the new house, advise the CWO (HEO now) or if you are covered by one of the Rents Unit, phone them for further advice.

You should qualify for RS once you satisfy a means test & have either been renting for a minimum of 6 months in the last 12 months or are on the Local Authority (for the address from which you are applying) housing list.

It is the claimant's responsibility to provide evidence of the above!

    Best of luck!:)

She would have to qualify in the usual way i.e., have already been renting for at least 6 months, been able to afford rent when tenancy started and suffered a loss of income since then, or, alternatively, get approved as in need of social housing by the local authority. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/supplementary_welfare_schemes/rent_supplement.html

She might find a place to share if staying with relatives or sleeping on friends' couches isn't possible. If she knows anyone in college in Dublin they would be a good source to use to find if there any vacancies in fellow students flats etc.
