Summer work in New York

    Hey guys,
I want to go to get a summer job in new york but I need some advice. I am 18 and have full American citizenship so thats not a problem there. I was planning to work from june to the end of august. The only work experience I have is a week with an electrician as a placement during secondary school. I have applied to loads of places here and things aren't looking good. Does anyone know of a student agency that will cater to Americans to help them get a job in New York for the summer. Not too pushed about what I'm doing really. The agency would have to be similar to the Irish J1 agencies that help source accomodation, work and possibly even flights. Not too pushed about the flights part though.
    Many Thanks
    Tommy

Could your folks finance your time there so you could do volunteer work instead?

TBH, I think you need to ask your question on an American forum. Suspect not too many Irish people will be in your situation.

The J1 agencies aren't going to help you, I think , because they focus on helping with the visa side, and I'd imagine make their cut from that.

I know a number of students working in NYC at the moment and it's all cash in hand bar work.

How they got it? Go to bars and talk to people. There's a particularly good Irish bar beside Bryant Park renowned for introducing Irish emigrants to NYC employers. Obviously it means there's nothing set in stone but I haven't known anyone who has went over and has had to return.

And sure if the worst comes to the very worst, at least you'll get a little holiday with great weather in the best city in the world :) With any luck you'll be there for the summer in it's entirety!

    Good luck!

Sorry, bad joke, it's a famous gay bar in NY. :)

They might go for your Irish accent though :) so tips would be good.

Haha, I suspected something but didn't want to jump the gun and be rude :P

But seriously, anyone have any idea what bar the poster was talking about?!
I have an idea based on searching google, but nothing really definitive. Would pm them but they have closed their account :(

Contact some of these guys and let them know when you are available. Be sure to tell them that you are a US citizen. You will have to pass a drug test. They hire a few hundred Irish students every summer for work in Manhattan apartment buildings.
