Im starting work experience next week and was just wandering should I stick with the car I have, 97 Toyota Starlet which does about 35 MPG or should I purchase a different car? I will be driving 400-500 miles a week which is quite alot! My budget would be €1500 max and switching insurance won't be a problem. If I should change car, have ye any recommendations for what would be good?

Wouldn't exactly be the safer at to be doing 25k miles a year in. An you're in diesel territory.
Old (99) well maintained passat perhaps

By the sounds of your mileage youll be doing motorway or national road mainly?

If you dont go too fast you might get better than 35mpg from a reasonably sized petrol engine.

You might find a half decent one for your budget with a few months tax. Keep looking.

The roads Il be driving are split fairly evenly between motorway,National and Regional roads.

Do you think I would be better off changing cars?

How long is your work experience and how long (distance) is your commute likely to be after the work experience?

1500 with the starlet or have you 1500 with the starlet to sell?

if its the later you could pick up a peugeot 206 1.4 hdi. small, cheap to tax and run and easy to sell on again

I'd stick with what you have for the moment and see how it goes. The Starlet is probably costing you nothing to run except for fuel. On such a low budget you could end up buying a money pit in haste.

Work experience will last 9 months or so. After that I will be averaging 150-200 miles a week

NCT is up roughly the same time I will finish my work experience (September). Would the starlet be worth more than €500 or €600 if I was too sell it now? Just over 150,000 miles on it.

€1500 plus whatever I could get if I sold my car

Tbh I'd keep it and have the 1500 aside for any repairs in the mean time, at least you know what gone into your car etc than buying a car and not knowing what's about to go.

given that you'll only be doing high mileage for 9 months, I think bazz's advice is the most sensible option.
