VAT on car imported from UK

I have just purchased a September 2011 car in the UK. When delivering my current car to the new owner his mate who is a car dealer was there and told me that I would be liable for VAT on the new car I have just bought as it's less that six months old. I thought the situation was that you were only liable for VAT if the car was less that six months old and had less that 6,000Km on the clock.

While I really appreciate anybody who gives of their time to respond the implication of me making the wrong call on this would be about €8K so please only respond if you are absolutely sure or have been through similar. The dealer in the UK informs me that he has sold many cars that were less than six months old to Irish customer.

Would really appreciate if somebody could confirm the situation.
