I've given my bike a good clean - to be honest, it was the first really proper clean that I gave it since I bought it 3 months ago. I did oil the chain once or twice, but 700km later, I did a bit of googleing to see what I needed to do.

So..... I started by degreasing the chain with a can of degreaser, I degreased the deraileurs, the front and rear rings and the brakes. I gave the whole bike a good wash down with soapy water, washed off the wheels, brushed the degreaser into the bike and then rinced it off, dried off the chain, re - oiled it and wiped off excess oil. It actually looks clean now. I also put a small bit of oil on the deraileurs. Should I oil anything or is there any part of the bike that needs grease???

Also, there's a little bit of oil streaks on some parts of the frame that didn't wash off with the soapy water - it kinda spread it a bit. A friend suggested that if I spray some wd40 on a cloth, it will remove it easily. But warned me not to spray it on the bike and to keep it away from the brakes and the chain rings. Is it safe to use the wd40 on the paintwork?

    Thanks Guys!

Oil Streaks? White spirits to take them off.

Then use some sort of car wax to protect the paintwork.

Yea, there's a bit of oil spray around the lower part of the frame. Nobody told me that you should wipe off the excess oil with a cloth the first time that I oiled it :o . The road dust then stuck to it and it looked a bit poor on the white parts of the frame.

    Thanks for the tips ;)

    Lesson learned then so :D

Remember with oil, particularity on the chain; less is more.

    Couple of nice resources

    Pink Bike

    Park Tool

    And any of Sheldons stuff

Do I need to grease anything as part of a regular service?

No. not for "regular" cleaning. There is grease in the wheel hubs, the BB and headset, but you shouldn't need to go near these when cleaning your bike.
Go easy on the degreaser too. Degrease the chain and cassette only.

Try cleaning your bike once a week...doesn't get as dirty so easier to clean.

As well as the chain, a couple of drops of oil on the brake pivots (both calipers and shifters) and the derailleur pivots.

I also run a bit of oil down the cable inners when servicing (Pull the sleeve out of the frame stop, slide it out of the way, oil the inner).
