The Mythical Sky+ enabling Blue cards...

    ..do exist!

Can't believe it, I just got my hands on one, have to say I was very sceptical that these things ever existed as the stories were always secondhand or just didn't make sense e.g. people always claimed that these cards missed the 'kill' signal from Sky because they were taken out of the box for 6 months etc.
I always knew that was untrue as I have a Linux based sat box and could always see that the Entitlements (or expiry dates) on these cards were maximum 2 months ahead and even if you missed the actual 'kill' signal the card entitlements would lapse shortly afterwards. I just confirmed this now by inserting my Blue card into my Linux box and, as expected, there as no entitlements, so that clearly dispels that theory/ rumour. Of course it's still a mystery as to why these cards do enable recording but suppose I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth!

Oh, I also tried this in a HD box and works fine, recording, pausing etc on all the FTA channels.

No, completely different, 'Normal' Blue cards can add UK FTA channels to your Irish sub and allow them to be recorded but this card works without any sub.

Thanks for free plug to my advert though :D

Yeah, exactly. Like I said, had heard rumours they existed before and the great thing is it works in a HD box too.

The trick only works with HD boxes, I'm led to believe.

I'd say with a big pinch of luck, I've had quite a few Blue cards go though my hands in the past few months and this is my first one.

Yes but this card appears to work in Sky+ and Sky+ HD boxes (well I only tried one of each).

Yes, I heard about the 'trick' over on the digitalspy.co.uk forums.

About three years ago when I cancelled Sky (UK Subscription), I unplugged my Sky box and put it in the bottom of a wardrobe a few days before my subscription ran out.

About six months later I connected it up again and I had a "freesat from Sky" box which still records. Still working now.

Ah, it was your account I remember hearing before, the 'wardrobe' bit rang a bell ;)

Still can't figure out why this works though (for the reasons I listed above), suppose we'll never know now that the Blue cards are long gone!

    Does this still work?

Apparently not, I heard somewhere that this was one of the 'loopholes' they plugged with the introduction of the White cards.

well that's a shame, i'm looking to dump sky altogether and making use of our sky+ and HD boxes with FTA recording would have been a bonus.

i don't suppose there's any other options is there?

Okay, whatever about doing this with your own card, selling these cards (which are the property of Sky / NDS) is not on.

    Thread closed.
