anyone know of a printer/scanner combo that has the following:

    1. cheap ink cartridges (genuine ones, not looking for 3rd party ones)

    2. i only print B&W, from i gather you can't get mono printers anymore, but would like a printer that if the colour was empty it would not refuse to print with the Black ink being full.

    3. A basic scanner

    Thanks.

I don't know of any manufacturer who makes cheap original cartridges, the ones that spring to mind are Canon and Kodak, while Lexmark, Epson and HP being much pricier. Having said that I think it depends on printer models, some use more than 2 inks, so prices can cost more due to this factor.
Your best bet is probably a laser all in one, if colour isn't an issue toner lasts much longer. I'm not aware of any printer that will print with a colour ink empty (the manufacturers excuse is if left for too long the ink head could dry up, so they require you have a set with ink in them present)

I never even thought of laser printer,

    I found this:

    SAMSUNG ML-1860 Monochrome Laser Printer
    http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/SAMSUNG-ML1860-Monochrome-Laser-Printer/307497/315

It comes with a Toner Cartridge that can print 700 pages

SAMSUNG MLT-D1052S Black Toner Cartridge €84.99 (the standard one prints 1500 pages)

The printer is pretty cheap and that cartridge will last me about a year. I can always keep using the scanner i have for the time being.

I received an email that another user responded to my post, but theres no post?

Yeah a laser is the only realistic option for allot of B&W printing. Toners cost a bit but last a good while, the only thing with lasers is the drum can also need replacing on some models (I think with some its imbuilt into the toner but don't quote me on that) but yeah go laser!

Edit: €51 for an original Samsung laser toner here

The best printer all depends on the amount of money you want to spend.

This one is a bit expensive, but has scanner, can fax, automatic document feeder and you can hook it up to network. It is an inkjet, but the ink is far cheaper than any laser I've looked at recently; black in is HP940XL @ roughly 2200 pages for only around €20 (if vat inc I don't know) or 1c per sheet! Takes colour too

We do a lot of color printing in our business and there is nothing wrong with third party cartridges. But, we have since moved to an endless ink system. It's the best way it you want to save money on ink.

Thanks for links, but i'm gonna go with the Laser, it suits my needs.

I used 3rd party cartridges on two separate printers and they leaked, the first i managed to clean back to working order, but the second was destroyed. I'm sure they work perfectly for many people, but i'm not gonna risk a 3rd time.

That can happen shop "refilled" ones, proper compatibles that are remanufactured work very well, my Epson takes 6 individual inks and I get all 6 for €6, pritty nice :) . I think 6 origionals are €60, so the difference is more than substantial!

We were getting are cartridges online from Hong Kong, apart from the reds not being as bright as we needed in some cases, we never had a problem with them.

I do think the laser in your case is ideal though. If all your doing is black and white.
