Best TV package for a newbie?

    Any help greatly appreciated!

Our new house is nearly ready for habitation! We will be buying a new smart TV but are unsure of the deals to go for as regards satellite packages? We were thinking of UPC because we will want phone and broadband as well. We don't need any sports or premium movie channels but would like to be able to access Swedish TV. I'm guessing we can do this by hooking up the laptop to the TV and watching it this way?

Are there any alternatives we should be thinking of? Netflix is popping up a lot. Should we be considering this? We're not huge TV watchers but would like to have a good choice before we commit. Is there anything we're missing or should we be considering a satellite dish?

Check out http://www.freesat.co.uk/ for free tv stations.
Also, not sure about Swedish, but a lot of foreign language tv on http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?&pos=19.2E&standard=All&ordre=freq&filtre=Clear and http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-13E-fta.php

You will need a dish and receiver and possibly a Saorview receiver and aerial.
One off payment and no bills.

I had UPC and dropped the tv but still have Broadband and Phone.

Our new TV will be Saorview. What type of dish & receiver should we be thinking of?

Aerial for Saorview, dish & receiver for satellite.

You won't get any foreign tv via UPC. Better to get a freesat setup if you don't want Sky.Remember freesat is a once off payment and will probably suit you best as you stated you don't watch much tv.

Even if you get Sky,you can always get a dish & receiver for Swedish tv separately.Have a look in the foreign satellite forum for help on getting Swedish tv.

As posted by tc UPC is best for broadband, not so good for tv.You can get broadband/phone as a standalone service from UPC.Plus remember that UPC isn't available everywhere-you can check their website for availability where you live.

Thanks. My mother lives next door and has a satellite dish still on the wall from about 7 years ago that she got when she had sky. Is it possible to use this dish or is it obsolete now? Could we use it by leaving it on her wall or would we have to move it to ours? It's a terraced house.

Dish might be ok. Best to get your own installed due to insurance issues etc.Plus a sky dish is no good for multi lnbs/motorised setup etc. if you're planning on UK/Swedish tv.

Here's an example of a multi lnb setup.

To get sky it will be ok just run a wire from it into your house and into a sky box
you can get free to air channel and then an aerial for rte/tv3 ect

Don't want to pay for Sky especially if I'm going to buy a freesat box. Trying to keep this as cheap as possible. If the dish is already there I though we might as well utilise it! Can we use the dish for anything else without moving it?

List all the channels available free from a disused sky dish

Crikey, that's quite a lot! So I get someone to run a cable from the sky dish into whatever freesat box I buy and off I go? That in conjunction with Saorview should keep me up all night :D

You could run the cable yourself and save a few bob, lots of tutorial videos on Youtube which are easy to follow-so long as you don't mind going up a ladder.
